LA JOLLA, Calif. -
Travis Bradshaw threw 6.1 innings of one-run baseball in his starting debut to help No. 33 Western Oregon split a doubleheader with No. 30 UC San Diego, 14-4 and 2-1, on Saturday, Feb. 4.
The Wolves have now won two of three games to open the season, and have held opponents to one run in each win.
Game 1
In the opening game things looked good for WOU early as it carried the momentum of its season opening win into the game by scoring two, two-out runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
That lead would be short lived however, as UCSD would score seven unearned runs in their half of the inning to take the lead for good. After recording the first out of the inning the Tritons would generate one run on a sacrifice fly then the next six batters would reach base to give UCSD the 7-2 lead after the first inning.
The Tritons would tack on four runs (two unearned) in the third and go on to win the game 14-4.
Danny Susdorf went 3-for-4 with three RBI for UCSD. Brett Levy also had three RBI for the Tritons as the catcher went 3-for-5.
Brady Locker and
Blake Miller had two hits apiece for WOU.
Quinn Naughtin would add two RBI for his first runs batted in of his Western Oregon career.
Game 2
Travis Bradshaw (1-0) made his first collegiate start a memorable one as he pitched WOU to a 2-1 win in game two. The senior threw 6.1 innings of one-run ball while striking out four and walking none. He allowed just one hit in the first five innings which included setting the Tritons down in order four times.
He only ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. With WOU leading 2-1, Justin Rahn led off the inning with a single. He was then sacrificed down to second base, and Western Oregon head coach Jeremiah Robbins went to his bullpen for
Ian MacDougall.
After the Tritons pinch hit, the runner at second stole third with just one out. MacDougall then got the strikeout he needed, followed by a grounder to shortstop, to close out the game for the Wolves and earn his second save in as many days.
The Wolves got both their runs in the fifth inning.
Michael Gange and
AJ Royal led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 1-1. After
Eric Copenhagen sacrificed Royal to third, and
Blake Miller was walked intentionally,
Scott David singled to second base and score Royal for what proved to be the winning run.
David and Miller had two hits apiece to led the Wolves who outhit UCSD 9-3.
The Tritons only run of the game came on a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Next game
Western Oregon and UC San Diego will close out their four-game series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday (Feb. 5) at 11:00 a.m.
