Road Trip Continues:
Coming off a series win against No. 30 UC San Diego, the No. 33 Western Oregon baseball team will pile back onto the bus as they head north along the California coast to Rohnert Park, Calif., to play Sonoma State Feb. 8-10th.
A Look At The Wolves:
The Wolves hold a 3-1 record to start the season. Winning their first, third, and fourth games of the series.
Grady Wood got the win in the first game as he pitched seven innings allowing just an earned run in the fourth inning, while striking out six to lead WOU to an 8-1 win.
Bo Folkinga had three RBI to lead the team, while eight different Wolves crossed home plate.
In the third game of the weekend,
Travis Bradshaw made his first collegiate start as he pitched 6.1 innings of one-run ball while striking out four as the Wolves went on to win 2-1.
Kirk Lind threw four scoreless innings, which included retiring 10 straight batters, and
Blake Miller went 3-for-3 with an RBI to help the Wolves win 5-4.
Bradshaw earns NCBWA Pitcher of the Week Honors:
Travis Bradshaw has been selected as the West Region Pitcher of the Week by the National Colligate Baseball Writers Association for the week of Feb. 5-11th.
Bradshaw helped the Wolves win their series at No. 33 UCSD as he pitched in the second game of a doubleheader, beating UC San Diego, 2-1, on Saturday, Feb. 4th.
Bradshaw, a senior from Woodinville, Wash. (Woodinville HS), pitched 6.1 innings of work while striking out four and walking none. He allowed just one hit in the first five innings, including setting the Tritons down in order four times.
Bradshaw joins Chris Miller from Cal Poly Pomona as the NCBWA West Region Player of the Week.
Bradshaw and Miller Snag GNAC Honors:
Coming off their series win over No. 30 UC San Diego, the No. 33 Western Oregon baseball team has swept the initial Great Northwest Athletic Conference weekly awards for the 2012 baseball season.
Travis Bradshaw, a senior right handed pitcher from Woodinville, Wash. (Woodinville HS), was named the GNAC Pitcher of the Week after he allowed just three hits in 6.1 innings in the Wolves' 2-1 win Saturday as he made his first WOU start. He allowed just one hit in the first five innings which included setting the Tritons down in order four times. Bradshaw didn't walk a batter and fanned four. Last year he pitched in seven games, all in relief.
Blake Miller, a junior shortstop from Salem (South Salem) who transferred in from Sacramento State in the offseason, had an impressive debut, batting .500 as WOU won three of four games at UC San Diego. Miller had seven hits in 14 at bats and scored a team-best five runs en route to being named the GNAC Player of the Week. Among his hits were a double and two triples as he posted on-base and slugging averages of .611 and .857, respectively. Defensively, he handled 16 of 17 chances successfully at shortstop.
A Look at the Sonoma State Seawolves:
Sonoma State enters Wednesday's matchup with Western Oregon after winning their season opener, 6-2, against Cal State East Bay. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
Junior Steven Filippi had four hits, including a triple, to pace Sonoma State's 11-hit attack on Saturday. The Seawolves win on Saturday marked their 12th straight season that the Sonoma State baseball team has opened with a win.
Harmen Sidhu got the start for the Seawolves and struck out three and allowing just four hits and a run in four innings. Thomas Lee pitched four innings out of the bullpin, yielding just three hits and a run to make way for Mike Garber to pitch the ninth inning.
In 2010 Western Oregon took the season series from Sonoma State, winning 2-of-the-3 games.
The Wolves and Seawolves are even at 10-10 in the all-time series record.
