Wolves and Wildcats split doubleheader

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Western Oregon and Central Washington split a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 24, with WOU winning game one 12-6 and CWU winning game two 2-1.

The loss was the first of the season for the Wolves (16-7, 5-1 GNAC) in conference play. With the split Central Washington (9-9) is now tied with WOU atop the GNAC standings at 5-1.

Game 1
Grady Wood took a one-hitter into the eighth inning and Bo Folkinga went 4-for-5 with a career-high seven runs batted in to lead the Wolves to a 12-6 win Over Central Washington in the first game of the doubleheader.

Folkinga had two doubles and a three-run homer to lead the Wolves' attack that outhit the Wildcats 11-6. Eight of the Wolves' hits went for extra bases. David Amberson knocked out his third home run of the season and added a double. Kyle Blackwell hit his first homer of the season in the seventh. Griff Boyd went 2-for-3 with two doubles and Matt Nylen added a two bagger of his own.

Wood (6-0) cruised through seven innings, allowing only two base runners while striking out 10. He ran into trouble in the eighth to get knocked out of the game. He finished the game allowing four hits and four runs (three earned) with 10 strikeouts in seven innings.

Even with the late offensive outburst by the Wildcats the game was never that much in question as the Wolves never trailed in the game. WOU scored in each of the first four innings and held a 7-0 lead after four. Then they added one in the seventh and four in the eighth to go up 12-0.

Game 2
Central Washington took advantage of three WOU errors to score two unearned runs to steal a 2-1 win from the Wolves in game two.

Jason Wilson took the loss after going six innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs, while striking out eight. However, it was two throwing errors by Wilson which led to both Wildcat runs.

CWU opened the scoring in the second inning with a single run on a miscued throw during a bunt attempt. WOU would answer back with one of their own in the third on an RBI-single by David Amberson to score Griff Boyd. The Wildcats took the lead back for good in the fourth on a sacrifice fly following an error on a failed pickoff attempt.

Kyle Long went the complete game for CWU allowing five hits and one run, wile striking out three.

WOU outhit CWU 5-3.
