Big innings, pitching leads WOU to doubleheader sweep

MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon offense put together a couple big innings and it received solid pitching over all 16 innings to sweep a doubleheader from Saint Martin's, 13-0 and 5-2, on Monday (Apr. 2).

The wins move No. 26th ranked Wolves (20-7) four games ahead of Central Washington in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a 9-1 record. Saint Martin's (9-23, 5-9 GNAC) fell six games out of first place with the losses.

Game 1
Grady Wood pitched a one-hitter over seven innings and David Amberson led Western Oregon to eight first inning runs to lift the Wolves to a 13-0 win in the opener.

Grady Wood and Bryan Pisca combined to allow just two hits en route to recording the Wolves' third shutout of the season. Wood went the first seven innings allowing only a hit by pitch and an infield single, which came to lead off the seventh. He struck out six and induced 11 groundball outs. Pisca finished off the game by pitching the final two innings while allowing one hit and striking out two.

Amberson, who finished the game 2-for-4, proved to not only be a table-setter but a run producer in the Wolves' eight-run first. Amberson led off the game with a triple to right-center field and came home to score on a double by Matt Nylen. Amberson and Nylen would start the rally in which the first seven hitters would reach base and give WOU the 4-0 lead with the bases still loaded. After SMU recorded a pair of outs, Amberson came back to the plate and belted a grand slam over the left field wall to give the Wolves an 8-0 lead.

Amberson's extra base hits were two of the nine WOU recorded for the game. Blake Miller was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four runs scored. AJ Royal and Bo Folkinga had two hits apiece for Western Oregon which outhit Saint Martin's 15-2.Folkinga and Kyle Blackwell both knocked in two runs as well.

Nate O'Bryan took the loss for Saint Martin's after he failed to record an out in the first inning while allowing seven runs.

Game 2
Blake Miller and Bo Folkinga each doubled in two runs as part of a Wolves' four-run third inning rally to lift Western Oregon to a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

Miller finished the game by going 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Griff Boyd also collected two hits as he went 2-for-2 and crossed the plate twice.

Jason Wilson (2-2) started the game and went he first four innings to pick up his second win of the year. He gave up just two hits and an unearned run while walking five and striking out five. Coach Robbins went to Kirk Lind with one on in the fifth inning, and the senior came in and held SMU to one hit and one run over the final three innings to pick up his first save of the season.

The Wolves were down 1-0 entering the bottom of the third inning when Griff Boyd led off the inning with a single. After he was sacrificed to second base, Amberson doubled to center field to put runners at second and third. Matt Nylen then drew a walk to load the bases for Miller. Miller ripped a line drive down the left field line to plate two and give WOU its first lead in game two. Nylen and Miller would then come home on an opposite field double by Folkinga, as he recorded his GNAC-leading 35th RBI of the season.

Next games
Western Oregon will be at home again next weekend when it hosts Montana State Billings on Apr. 7-8. Saturday's doubleheader will start 1:00 p.m. and Sunday's will begin at Noon.
