Baseball clinches 11th straight GNAC championship

MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon baseball team completed its first goal of the season by capturing the 2012 Great Northwest Athletic Conference title with a 10-2 and 5-1 doubleheader sweep of Central Washington on Senior Day (Apr. 29).

This is the 11th straight GNAC title for the Wolves (31-8, 20-2 GNAC) and 12th overall.

Game 1
Kirk Lind picked up the win in his final home start and Griff Boyd drove in three runs to help the Wolves pick up a 10-2 victory in game one.

Lind improved his career record to 23-7 by throwing six innings of two-run ball while striking out five.

The Wolves gave Lind a lead to work with throughout the game as they scored in each of the first four innings. They pushed two across the plate in the first and another in the second on an RBI single by Brady Locker. WOU broke the game open with five runs in the third to go up 8-0. Boyd had a two-run double in the rally and Eric Copenhagen added two more with a triple.

Kyle Blackwell collected three hits and two runs scored to lead WOU. Boyd, Locker, Blake Miller and Bo Folkinga each added two hits apiece to help the Wolves outhit the Wildcats 13-7.

The bullpen would take over for Lind in the seventh inning and throw three innings of scoreless ball. Ian MacDougall gave up two hits and struck out two in his two innings of work. Jason Hollinger pitched a perfect ninth while fanning one to finish off the game.

Game 2
Jason Wilson pitched a complete game allowing just five hits and one run while striking out six to help Western finish off the doubleheader sweep with a 5-1 win in game two.

After a small scare in the first inning, Wilson settled in and got 13 of the next 14 batters in order to earn the win.

In support of Wilson, WOU put up three runs in the second and two more in the fourth. AJ Royal and Griff Boyd both had RBI singles in the second, and Boyd also added a steal of home. Western Oregon tacked on two insurance runs in the fourth on a steal home by Royal and an RBI double by Matt Nylen.

Both teams had five hits and four runners left on base but it was the Wolves aggressive running (seven steals) and execution (two steals of home) that earned WOU the win.

The Western Oregon baseball team will close out its homestand with a doubleheader against Saint Martin's on Wednesday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m.
