BILLINGS, Mont. -
Blake Miller hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh as Western Oregon swept a doubleheader from Montana State Billings, 9-4 and 6-4, on Friday, May 11.
Miller and
Griff Boyd each recorded four-RBI games to help the Wolves move to 38-9 on the season and to 27-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Game 1
Boyd went 3-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base, two runs scored and four RBI to lift Western Oregon over MSU Billings 9-4 in the opener.
Grady Wood (12-0) picked up his 20th straight victory but this was one of the toughest in his streak. After MSU Billings pushed two runs across the plate in the first inning, they would load the bases with one out in the second inning but Wood got a strikeout and a groundball to keep any more runs off the board.
Wood settled in after the second inning allowing just one base runner over the next five innings, including retiring the last 12 batters in a row. He finished the game with seven innings pitched while giving up six hits and two earned runs. He struck out seven and walked just one.
Boyd would provide the first runs of the game for the Wolves with his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the third of the season to tie the game at 2-2. Boyd would add a two-run, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the fourth to stake WOU to a 4-2 advantage which it would not relinquish.
Game 2
Blake Miller's three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning capped off a four-run rally by the Wolves in the nightcap to lift them to the 6-4 win.
Western Oregon trailed 4-2 entering the top of the seventh having just four hits off MSU Billings' Samuel Paterson through the sixth inning but found a way to win their 11th straight game in Montana.
Griff Boyd started the inning with a single then Mike Gange was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout,
Matt Nylen singled through the right side to score Boyd from second and bring the Wolves within one (4-3).
Blake Miller then came to the plate and took the seventh pitch he saw over the left field wall to put the Wolves in front for good at 6-4.
The Yellowjackets looked to mount a rally of their own in the bottom of the seventh when the first two batters of the inning singled. WOU coach Jeremiah Robbins then called
Ian MacDougall out of the bullpen for the second time of the afternoon. MSU Billings would load the bases on the next batter but MacDougall would get a strikeout on the batter and then a double play to end the game. This was the seventh save on the season for the GNAC leader.
Jason Wilson (5-2) went the first six innings and picked up the win after WOU's four-run seventh. Wilson struck out five while giving up five hits and four runs.
David Amberson helped spark the Wolves' offense from his leadoff spot. He had two hits to go along with two runs and two stolen bases.
Next games
Western Oregon and MSU Billings will get back together on Saturday (May 12) for another doubleheader starting at Noon (PST).
