Four punch their ticket to NCAA Nationals

MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon track & field team just completed the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships, but the season is not done for four members of the team who will go on to represent the Wolves at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Pueblo, Colo. May 24-26.

Ashley Potter and Amanda Schumaker will both be returning to Nationals with NCAA auto qualifying standards. Potter with a 40-9 (12.42m) in the triple jump and Schumaker with a 158-11 (48.43m) in the javelin. Seabre Church and Dan Sprinkle both earned their trip to Nationals with provisional qualifying standards in the javelin and 3000m steeplechase, respectively.

Schumaker will enter Nationals with the third longest throw in the javelin this season at 158-11 (48.43m) which she set at the Beach Invitational. Her mark shattered the Western Oregon school record and moved her to fifth in GNAC history. The junior from Gladstone, Ore., also won the GNAC Outdoor Championship in the javelin with a throw of 154-1.5 (46.97m) to set the meet record.

Potter placed ninth on the 2012 NCAA performance list with her leap of 40-9 (12.42m). Her mark set the GNAC Outdoor record and secured her spot a top the Wolves all-time top 10 list. The senior from Springfield, Ore. (Thurston HS) also won the triple jump at the GNAC Outdoor Championships for the second time in her career when she leaped to her NCAA auto qualifying standard.

Church will join Schumaker in the javelin throw after placing 10th in the NCAA this season with a throw of 142-1 (43.31m). She placed third at the GNAC Outdoor Championships and ranks seventh in school history. The sophomore from Florence, Ore. (Siuslaw HS) will be one of four GNAC participants in the javelin throw at Nationals.

Sprinkle ran a time of 9:00.94 in the men's steeplechase at the GNAC Championships to get into Nationals. His time was the 15th-best mark in the country this year. It ranks him third in Western Oregon history and fourth in the GNAC record books. This will be the third trip to the NCAA Championships for Sprinkle, who also ran on the Western Oregon cross country team which has gone to back to back National Championships.

Sprinkle will get things started for Western Oregon at Nationals when he runs in the steeple prelims at 7:10 p.m. on Thursday, May 24. Potter will then jump on Friday at 5:15 p.m. Schumaker and Church will close out the Nationals for Western Oregon when they throw on Saturday starting at 1:50 p.m.
