MONMOUTH, Ore. - The No. 11 Western Oregon baseball team got back to its winning ways by sweeping a doubleheader from Saint Martin's on Sunday, May 6. The Wolves won the opener 14-3 behind senior
Kirk Lind and then they scored three in the top of the seventh in game two to prevail 6-5.
Western Oregon, who is ranked No. 1 in the West, is now 36-9 on the season and 25-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Saint Martin's falls to 15-35 and 11-21 in the GNAC.
Game 1
Kirk Lind (6-2) threw six innings of three run ball while giving up five hits and striking out six in the Wolves' 14-3 win. He then gave way to
Ian MacDougall who held the Saints scoreless over the final three innings for his GNAC leading sixth save of the season.
Garrett Harpole had three hits and four RBI to lead the Wolves.
Blake Miller,
David Amberson and
Michael Gange all crossed the plate three times. Amberson, Miller, Gange,
Bo Folkinga and
Matt Nylen all collected two hits apiece.
Western Oregon trailed 2-0 after the fourth inning, then it scored four runs in the fifth and six in the sixth to seize control of the game.
Game 2
David Amberson,
Matt Nylen and
Blake Miller each singled in runs in the top of the seventh to help the Wolves come from two down in the last inning and earn a 6-5 win.
Saint Martin's scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to go on top 5-3.
AJ Royal would get the seventh inning rally started by leading off the inning with a walk. After advancing to third on a single by
Josh Solemsaas, Royal came in to score on single by Amberson to bring the Wolves within one (5-4).
Nylen would then tie the game at 5-5 by singling in Solemsaas from third. Miller would knock Amberson in with the winning run on a single through the left side.
Jason Wilson (5-2) won his third straight decision by throwing six innings and giving up nine hits and five runs.
AJ Burke picked up his fourth save of the year by picking a scoreless seventh inning.
Amberson had two hits and drove in two runs for the Wolves.
Next games
Western Oregon will be at Montana State Billings next Friday and Saturday to close out its regular season schedule. Friday's contest will start at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday's at Noon.
