Wolves and Saints split doubleheader

- Grady Wood won his 19th straight decision as he pitched No. 11 Western Oregon to a 19-0 win in the opener of the doubleheader, but Saint Martin's spoiled the Wolves' eight game winning streak with a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

WOU is now 34-9 on the season and 23-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

Game 1
Grady Wood gave up just two hits over seven innings while striking out seven to improve to 11-0 on the season. His 19 game winning streak is the fourth longest in NCAA Division II history.

Matt Nylen had two home runs, three runs scored and six RBI to lead the Wolves. He and Blake Miller each had four hits, and Miller and Garrett Harpole each knocked in four runs.

The Wolves gave Wood the early lead the work with by scoring two in the first on a single by Miller. Nylen's three-run homer then capped off WOU's four-run fourth. After adding three in the sixth and one in the seventh the Wolves put up nine in the ninth for the final margin of victory.

Game 2
Saint Martin's built a 4-0 after three innings and then held off multiple Wolves' comeback attempts to earn the win.

WOU cut the lead in half with two runs in the fifth when Griff Boyd scored on a balk and David Amberson doubled in Josh Solemsaas. Boyd, who had three hits in the game, cut the Saints' lead to one in the sixth on a two out single.

Western Oregon would load the bases in the seventh but the Saints went to their bullpen for Nate O'Bryan who got the final out for the save.

Western Oregon will continue its series against Saint Martin's on Sunday, May 6 starting at Noon.
