MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team battled back from a 16-point deficit to take the lead against Saint Martin's; however, were unable to hang on against the Saints as the Wolves fell, 54-47, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Saturday evening. With the loss, WOU falls to 6-11 on the season, 1-6 in league play, while the Saints improve to 10-7 overall, 3-4 in conference action.
Saint Martin's jumped out to a big lead from the start as the Saints held WOU scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the contest to build a 16-point lead. The Wolves managed to fight back; however, as a solid defensive effort cut the Saints lead to 24-17 at the break.
WOU managed to overcome the large deficit with 11:06 remaining in the contest as
Lorrie Clifford's three-pointer from the corner gave the Wolves their first lead of the game at 35-34. Saint Martin's had the final answer; however, as a pair of three-pointers by Jordyn Richardson late in the game gave the Saints an insurmountable lead.
SMU would go on to claim a 54-47 victory as WOU managed to shoot only 24.1 percent (13-of-54) from the field for the contest.
Mariah Durian came off the bench to lead the Wolves with 14 points while
Chantel Divilbiss has 11 points for WOU in the loss.
Saint Martin's did not fare much better from the field as an aggressive Wolves man-to-man defense held the Saints to just 39.5 percent from the field. Chelsea Haskey had 14 points to lead SMU while Richardson added 13 for the Saints.
Dana Goularte and
Melissa Fowler each grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wolves as rebounds were equal at 39-39.
WOU will look to rebound from the loss when the Wolves return to action on Thursday, Jan. 24, when the Wolves host Alaska Anchorage at 7:00 p.m.
