BILLINGS, Mont. – Junior forward
Melissa Fowler led the Western Oregon women's basketball team with 20 points and nine rebounds; however, it would not be enough as the Wolves fell to Montana State Billings, 62-55, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Thursday night. With the loss, WOU falls to 7-13 on the season, 2-8 in league play, while MSUB improves to 13-5, 7-3 in league action, with the victory.
After falling behind by 22 points in the second half, the Wolves mounted a furious rally, cutting the lead to single digits with 2:34 remaining. Unfortunately, WOU would be unable to get closer than five the rest of the way as the Yellowjackets rebounded from a loss to the Wolves earlier in the season.
Fowler led the Wolves in scoring for the third consecutive game as the frontcourt player finished the night 8-of-15 from the floor.
Mariah Durian added 12 points for WOU while
Dana Goularte came off the bench to score 13 points for the Wolves while going 6-of-9 from the field.
The Wolves shot 43.9 percent from the field for the contest (23-of-53) as WOU went 2-of-10 from behind the three-point line.
The Yellowjackets built a 30-20 halftime lead and extended the advantage to 22 points with a 25-13 run to open the second half.
MSUB finished the night just 21-of-64 (32.8 percent) from the floor as Kayleen Goggins and Monica Grimsrun led the Yellowjackets with 13 points each.
WOU will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 2, when the Wolves travel to Seattle, Wash., to face Seattle Pacific at 2:00 p.m.
