MONMOUTH, Ore. -- The Western Oregon University women's soccer team pulled out a 2-0 win over Simon Fraser University Thursday. The shutout was the ninth of the season, breaking a 14-year-old school record.
The Wolves (7-2-4, 5-2-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) broke the 1999 season's eight shutouts, and this year's team still has five games. Thursday's victory sets up a matchup with an undefeated and second-ranked nationally, Western Washington, Saturday.
Amanda Rose Johnson improved to 4-2-3 this season. She recorded her seventh shutout of the season, which is second in the GNAC. The junior made her 31st and 32nd saves this season. She has blocked 88 percent of the shots she has faced in 2013.
Kealakekua Makekua opened the scoring in the 37th minute. She struck a ball just inside 20 feet, low past a diving Simone Tessler, to the bottom right of the net. In the 53rd minute,
Makana Pundyke finished a
Taylor Higa cross with a shot to the right side of the goal. It was Pundyke's eighth goal of the year. The sophomore took five shots in the contest.
Western Oregon had a 17-3 advantage in shots. Yva Rodriguez and Jessica Marano both had shots on the WOU net in the setback. SFU (0-9-2, 0-7-2) had one corner kick to the Wolves' eight. Tessler fell to 0-7-1 in the net.
Saturday's meeting against No. 2 Western Washington kicks off at 1:30 p.m. at the Western Oregon University Soccer Field. The game will feature a live video stream on WOUWolves.com, along with a tape-delayed broadcast on KWVT in the Willamette Valley. The Vikings (12-0-0, 9-0-0) won the first meeting this season over WOU in Bellingham, 2-0. The Wolves have won all four games at home this season.
