MARIAH KONYN POSTGAME

AMANDA ROSE JOHNSON POSTGAME

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Mariah Konyn will always remember her first collegiate goal. The Western Oregon University women's soccer freshman found the back of the net in the first half to give the Wolves a 1-0 upset win over No. 2 and previously-unbeaten Western Washington University Saturday.

Western Oregon (8-2-4, 6-2-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) snapped the Vikings 11-game conference win streak. WOU remains perfect at home this season, and is now unbeaten in its last seven games overall. The last loss was a 2-0 decision at Western Washington on Sept. 26.  Saturday's victory was also the sixth out of 37 tries all-time versus WWU.

"This was a big win, the biggest since I've been here," WOU Head Coach Steve Ancheta said. "It shows how talented we are and far we've come."

The Wolves extended their program-record with their 10th shutout of the season. In the net, Amanda Rose Johnson had her eighth clean slate game. The junior made six saves in the win.

Just like the first meeting this season, Western Washington (12-1-0, 9-1-0 GNAC) had a large advantage in shots. The Vikings took 18 shots to WOU's two. But, it was the Wolves that made the most of their pair of opportunities.

After a loose ball could not be cleared successfully, Konyn struck a ball that rolled to her right foot into the upper left corner of the net in the 44th minute. Rachel Crawford had the shot on goal for Western Oregon late in the game, but her header off of a cross was saved by Alyssa Beauchamp.

Western Washington's Kristin Maris took five shots, placing three on goal. Ashton Griffen had three shots with one on goal. The Vikings had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams received a yellow card in the match.

Western Oregon and Western Washington now are tied for the top of the conference allowing only five goals this season. The Wolves 10 shutouts are the most by any team in the GNAC.

In the conference standings, WOU slides to third with a two-point cushion over Seattle Pacific. Central Washington is four points ahead of WOU in second. Western Oregon faces both of those schools next week, hosting Seattle Pacific on Thursday at 3 p.m., and Central Washington at 11 a.m. Saturday.

It is Hall of Fame weekend at Western Oregon. Fans are encouraged to wear red all weekend for Red Out. Fans can bring either of their Thursday or Saturday soccer ticket stubs, or a ticket stub from Saturday's football game, for free entry to Saturday's volleyball 7 p.m. match.
