BILLINGS, Mont. – The Western Oregon University volleyball team grabbed a five-set victory at Montana State University Billings Saturday, 16-25, 26-24, 25-19, 23-25, 15-3.
The Wolves (6-13, 3-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) played in their second straight five-set match, and dominated the fifth set for the win. WOU hit .104 in the match, and held the Yellowjackets to .058. MSUB had a 49-38 advantage in kills, but it also had 40 attack errors and 11 service errors.
Becky Blees led Western Oregon with nine kills.
Megan Triggs had a match-high 20 digs.
Jordin Ramos and
Erin Dobson had 19 and 12 assists.
Krissi Kemper had seven kills and hit .294, she also assisted on seven blocks. After having four block assists, Blees is now 15 block assists away from Northwest Nazarene's Cammy Dranginis' four-year-old record of 367 in a career.
It was another back-and-forth match for the Wolves. Thursday, WOU played in a match that had 30 ties and 11 lead changes. Saturday's match in Billings featured 43 ties and 22 lead changes. The second set had 16 ties and 10 lead changes. But, the fifth set was controlled by the Wolves. WOU hit .625 with no attack errors, while Montana State Billings was held to -.250 with seven attack errors.
Ashlynn Ward finished with a match-high 15 kills to lead MSU Billings (3-14, 1-8 GNAC). Monica Grimsrud added 11 kills. Kyndal Williams had 43 of the Yellowjackets' 47 assists. The sophomore had a double-double with 11 digs. Sydney Oberstein had 13 digs, while Kimmy Kirk added 10.
Western Oregon has won four straight matches over MSU Billings, including a sweep earlier this season in Monmouth. The Wolves have a 13-4 all-time advantage over MSUB. The Yellowjackets have lost five consecutive matches overall.
The Wolves welcome Saint Martin's (7-14, 3-6) for their next match Oct. 26. WOU won the Sept. 28 meeting in Lacey in four sets. It is Hall of Fame weekend at Western Oregon. Fans are encouraged to wear red all weekend for Red Out. Fans can bring either of their Thursday or Saturday soccer ticket stubs, or a ticket stub from Saturday's football game, for free entry to Saturday's volleyball 7 p.m. match.
