MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University volleyball team held off the University of Alaska in four sets for its third consecutive victory Thursday, 25-18, 25-21, 22-25, and 25-21.
The Wolves (8-13, 5-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) were paced by
Hannah Deede,
Christie Colasurdo, and
Becky Blees' combined 30 kills. All three finished with 10 terminations. WOU finished with a .266 hitting percentage. Colasurdo finished with a double-double adding a team-high 12 digs. She hit .417 in the match.
Jordin Ramos and
Erin Dobson had 25 and 18 assists. Blees had three service aces.
Cherene O'Hara and Hannah Crites both had six block-assists, while Deede and
Krissi Kemper both had five. Blees finished with four block-assists. The senior has amassed 364 blocking assists since 2010, and needs just three to equal Cammy Dranginis' four-year-old record.
Western Oregon had 15 team blocks in the match, the most of any Nanooks' opponent this season. The Wolves had seven block assists in the final set. It was the second most WOU has had this season. The Wolves tallied 16 against Concordia and 15 versus Minnesota State.
Sam Harthun had a match-high 14 kills to lead Alaska. Katelyn Camp dished out a match-high 37 assists. She also had a pair of service aces. Samantha Hesterman had 18 digs. Britt Glaeser added a team-high five block-assists.
The Nanooks (3-20, 2-10 GNAC) finished with a .116 hitting percentage. WOU had a slim 49-46 advantage in kills. UAF had 31 attack errors, compared to Western Oregon's 15. The Wolves' did commit 19 service errors in the contest. Alaska finished with 53 digs to Western Oregon's 44. WOU had a .480 attack percentage in the first set and held the Nanooks to -.156 in the fourth set.
Western Oregon welcomes Alaska-Anchorage (16-8, 10-2) Saturday for a 7 p.m. match. The Seawolves received votes for the fifth straight week in the AVCA Div. II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, checking in at 'No. 33 with 10 tallies. UAA snapped a four-match losing streak to WOU with the Oct. 3 sweep in Anchorage. Western Oregon has won the last three meetings over Alaska-Anchorage in Monmouth. WOU holds a 14-11 edge in GNAC meetings. The all-time series began in 1981, although teams didn't meet again until 1999.
Saturday, fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match. Western Oregon will be wearing some pink in support of breast cancer awareness. The match will feature live video and stats on WOUWolves.com. The match will also be televised live on KWVT in the Willamette Valley.
