MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season at Western Oregon University Saturday, 66-56.

The Lutes (1-1) were paced by three double-digit scorers. Shelly Kilcup and Samantha Potter both had double-double performances of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Kilcup made all 10 of her free throws, while Potter was 7-of-10 from the field. Katelyn Smith chipped in 10 points and four assists. Kilcup made three steals.

"We came out flat and never got it going," WOU Head Coach Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "When they took the lead, we put our heads down instead of rising to the challenge. We have to dig deep and start playing for each other in times like that. PLU played with energy and heart; they just wanted it more."

After shooting 34 percent from the field in the first half, PLU made 48 percent of its shots in the second half. The Wolves were 34 percent from the field in the game. The Lutes made 4-of-13 from behind-the-arc and 22-of-32 from the free throw line. WOU was 2-for-15 from three-point range and 14-of-19 from the free throw line.

The Wolves only trailed 2-0 in the first half, leading for the majority of the first stanza. WOU built its lead to 22-12 after a lay-in from Jackie Steiger at the 4:37 mark of the first half. The Lutes closed on a small run, and Western Oregon had a 37-32 halftime advantage.

Pacific Lutheran continued its run into the second half, closing a 30-21 deficit late in the first half to 32-31 two minutes into the second half. A Smith jumper two minutes later gave PLU the lead, 35-34. The teams exchanged the lead until the Lutes began to pull away for the road victory.

Western Oregon had a 10-0 advantage in fastbreak points and 16-3 edge in bench points. Both teams did well in the paint, as PLU scored 28 in the key to the Wolves' 26. The Lutes committed 19 turnovers, while WOU had 14.

Dana Goularte had a double-double for the Wolves (0-3). The junior finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. She also had three blocks. Chantel Divilbiss added 11 points.

"Dana had another great night but she can't do it alone, we need people to step up," Howard-Carpenter said. "I'm really proud of how Jordan (Mottershaw) played tonight; she gave us a great lift defensively and was aggressive going to the basket. She really played with heart."

The Wolves have a break until they host the annual Capitol City Classic on Nov. 29-30. WOU welcomes Cal-Maritime, Corban, and Willamette to the New P.E. Building for a four-game tournament. A tournament pass will be available, fans can watch all four games for $10.
