Falcons Fly in Five Sets

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Seattle Pacific University volleyball team escaped Senior Night at Western Oregon University with a five-set thrilling match Saturday, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-10.

The Falcons (14-10, 10-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) and WOU battled back and forth, switching who received the victory each set. However, Seattle's .223 hitting percentage over WOU's .174 helped give them the advantage and get the win.

The 39th all-time meeting was almost identical to the 38th meeting earlier this season in Seattle. The Falcons pulled out a five-set match on Oct. 17.

The team leaders of SPU included Madi Cavell with an impressive 23 kills and Nicki Lowell with 17. The setter, Sara Biondi led the team in assists with 52. Digs were led by Brianna Leenders with 19, and Madi Cavell with 15.

For the Wolves, Cherene O'Hara and Lani Kalalau led the team in kills with 13 each, followed by Krissi Kemper and Becky Blees, both with 11. Erin Dobson clinched the most assists at 30, followed closely by Jordin Ramos with 24. Megan Triggs overwhelmingly led the team in digs with 31.

Western Oregon (10-16, 7-9 GNAC) honored Blees, Kemper, and Triggs who all played their final matches inside the New P.E. Building on the WOU campus. 

Blees, the new all-time conference record holder in block assists, has had an amazing four seasons at Western Oregon University. After coming to WOU from Madison High School, the senior has been named honorable mention All-Conference twice, broke school records, while being a leader on and off the court for the Wolves. She is a multiple recipient of Academic All-Conference titles.

Kemper was named second team All-GNAC her freshman and sophomore seasons, and first team last year as a junior. Also in 2012, the senior was selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America team, after ranking second in the nation with a .425 hitting percentage.

Triggs has been the artist of the dig at Western Oregon since her freshman season. She has amassed 1,565 digs over her career at WOU. She has appeared in 334 sets, and her 4.68 digs per set is a school record. Triggs has been a staple in the conference's top five in digs since 2010.

Western Oregon travels to Northwest Nazarene Thursday and Central Washington Saturday for its final matches of the regular season. The WOU and Northwest Nazarene start is scheduled for 7 p.m. Mountain Time. Live video and stats will be on WOUWolves.com.
