BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Oregon University volleyball team fell in three sets at No. 10 Western Washington University Thursday, 21-25, 17-25, and 25-27.
The Wolves pushed top 10-ranked WWU in each set, but could not overcome the Vikings. Western Washington (18-3, 11-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) recorded its 16th sweep of the season and moved into a tie for first place in the conference standings with Alaska-Anchorage. The victory was the fourth straight for WWU.
Samantha Hutchinson, who entered the match ranked second nationally in digs per game at 6.81, finished with 32. That matched the fifth best three-set total in GNAC history. Kelsey Moore had a match-high 13 kills and Kayla Erickson added 11. Erickson also had a match-high four blocks. Taylor Dillard finished with 39 assists and two service aces. Bryce Larson had 13 digs.
Western Washington had a 46-37 advantage in terminations and a slim 70-69 edge in digs. The Vikings finished with a .233 attack percentage, while WOU was at .159.
Western Oregon (8-15, 5-8 GNAC) was led by
Hannah Deede's 10 kills and .364 attack percentage.
Megan Triggs had 22 digs.
Jordin Ramos and
Erin Dobson dished out 16 and 11 assists.
Western Washington now holds a 26-14 all-time advantage over Western Oregon in a series that dates back to 1988. The Wolves have not in Bellingham since 1999, falling in 14 straight matches.
Saturday, the Wolves travel to Burnaby, B.C., for a matchup with Simon Fraser (10-9, 5-8). Western Oregon has won 19 of the 20 all-time meetings. The Clan picked up its first victory over WOU all-time in the last meeting between the programs. SFU won the four-set match in Monmouth earlier this season.
