MONMOUTH, Ore. – Holli Howard-Carpenter's first game as head coach of Western Oregon University women's basketball was a memorable one. Notre Dame de Namur held off a late rally by WOU, and watched as a Wolves' shot at the buzzer fell short, pulling away with a 64-63 win in Game 2 of the WOU/Doubletree by Hilton D2 Shootout Friday.

"It's always tough to take it down to the wire and end up a point shy but I thought we executed well and put ourselves in position to win," Howard-Carpenter said. "We have to put it behind us and focus on tomorrow."

Felicia Oakmon came off the bench to lead NDNU (1-0) to a regular season-opening victory. She was 4-for-8 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free-throw line.  Jennifer Jasper added 15 points, seven rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Jasmine Waiters dished out a game-high six assists. Gabriella Rodriguez came away with three steals.

The game featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes. The Argos jumped out to a 9-2 advantage four minutes into the game. Western Oregon took the lead back at 15-14 at the 9:17 mark of the first half. Notre Dame de Namur had the lead for most of the first half, but a last second breakaway lay-in from Dana Goularte tied the score at 27 at halftime.

Notre Dame de Namur led for the majority of the second half as well. The Argos' largest lead was once again seven, 64-57, with 1:39 remaining in regulation. The Wolves closed the game on a 6-0 run, but missed out on a pair of opportunities in the final minute to take the lead.

"I thought we had a much better second half, we rebounded and knocked down our free throws which are two things we have been working at," Howard-Carpenter said.

Notre Dame de Namur shot 43.8 percent from the field, while Western Oregon finished 34.4 percent. WOU had a 33-27 advantage in rebounds. The Wolves turned 16 offensive rebounds into a 13-6 second-chance point edge. The Argos committed 17 turnovers to Western Oregon's 16. WOU outscored Notre Dame de Namur, 21-8, in points off of turnovers.

The Wolves' (0-1) Goularte led all scorers with 24 points. The junior completed a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds. She made seven of her 16 attempts from the field, and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. Shyla Akins added 14 points. Jackie Steiger led WOU with three steals.

"Dana played a great all-around game tonight and we had a great lift off the bench from Jackie and Shyla," Howard-Carpenter said.

Western Oregon faces Academy of Art (Calif.) at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Urban Knights were picked as the preseason favorite in the PacWest Conference, and are coming off of a 69-55 regular season-opening win over Saint Martin's Friday. ART won the first game of the WOU/Doubletree by Hilton D2 Shootout behind four scorers in double-digits. SMU and Notre Dame de Namur play in the third game of the Shootout at 12 p.m.
