MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University women's basketball team closes its non-conference schedule at home against Simpson University (Calif.) Saturday.
The Wolves (3-6, 1-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) ride into the contest after a pair of losses at the Las Vegas Challenge. WOU was victim to an opponent's rally in the first game, as Academy of Art came back from an 11-point second half deficit for the 84-71 win. Dixie State then beat Western Oregon, 88-78, behind a pair of 20-point scoring performances.
Dana Goularte totaled 39 points and 16 rebounds in the games. The junior continues to lead the team in scoring at 17.9 points per outing. She is currently fifth in the GNAC in scoring and third in rebounding (9.4). Goularte's 50.5 percent field goal percentage is seventh in the conference. She is also fourth at 1.6 blocks per game.
Chantel Divilbiss is adding 13.4 points per game, which is 11th in the conference. The senior has made 18 three-pointers this season, and is fourth in the GNAC at 2.0 per contest.
Simpson (6-7) rides into the week on a two-game skid, and has lost four of its past five games. Nichole Jones leads the Redhawks with 13.9 points per game. She is also 15th in NAIA Div. II with 3.09 steals per game. As a team, Simpson is taking the ball away from its opponents 10.7 times per outing, which is 22nd in NAIA Div. II. SU has five players averaging over four rebounds a game, led by Madison Cox's 4.5. All of the Redhawks' losses have been by double digits.
Western Oregon has won two of three all-time meetings. The Wolves won the first meeting in 2009, 55-44. Simpson won the last meeting, 77-74, in Monmouth, in 2012. This will be WOU's third game over a four-day span.
The non-conference matchup is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live video and stats will be on WOUWolves.com and live video on WOUTV.
The WOU men follow the women at 4:15 against South Dakota Mines. This will be the final time fans can watch Western Oregon Athletics in 2013, as both teams take a break for the holiday season. WOU faculty and staff are invited to the doubleheader for free. Local elementary school students and staff are also invited to the games for free. Fans will have a chance to meet Wolfie and a special guest from the North Pole at the games. An autograph session with the WOU women and men will follow the men's game inside the New P.E.
