MONMOUTH, Ore. – Behind an amazing night by
Dana Goularte, the Western Oregon University women's basketball team won a thrilling overtime game over Central Washington University Saturday, 71-63.
After leading 53-48 with 3:47 remaining in regulation, the Wolves watched CWU go on an 8-0 run. Jessica VanDyke gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game with 48 seconds left in the second half. Jasmine Parker made a steal on the ensuing possession and turned it into a lay-in to put Central Washington ahead, 56-53.
Katie Goddard tied the game with a three-pointer with 17 seconds left in the half, and sent the game into overtime. WOU made all four of its shots from the field in the extra period.
Goularte scored 19 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, and blocked six shots in the Wolves' (3-4, 1-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) first victory in the conference this season. The junior made seven of her 12 shots from the field. After her 26 point-performance Thursday, she became the first WOU player to grab 17 rebounds since Shannon Talbott did at Central Washington on Feb. 2, 2005. The Port Orchard, Wash. native, was also the first Wolf to block six shots since Rylee Peterson did on Dec. 1, 2011, against Central Washington again.
"I can't say enough about Dana's effort tonight," WOU Head Coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "She had one of the best all around performances I've ever seen. She defended, made some great passes and was a beast on the boards."
Goularte had her 22nd double-digit scoring performance in her career, and eighth double-double. It was her third double-double of the season.
Chantel Divilbiss added 14 points and a game-high five assists for the Wolves. Goddard scored 10 points off of the bench.
Melissa Fowler grabbed 10 rebounds.
Elise Miller made three steals.
Western Oregon forced the Wildcats into 16 turnovers, and held CWU to 33 percent shooting from the field. Central Washington made only five of its 26 attempts from behind-the-perimeter. WOU finished 39 percent from the field, 9-of-24 from three-point range, and 12-for-23 from the free throw line. The Wolves had a 54-46 rebound advantage as well.
"I'm so proud of our team, they dug deep for this win and they deserve it," Howard-Carpenter said. "Melissa did a great job tonight being more aggressive and grabbed key rebounds for us when we needed them. Katie was absolutely huge off the bench. Not only did she knock down the shot to send it to OT but she had six boards, defended and took care of the basketball. Kelsey (Henry) did a great job off the bench as well. When Mel and Dana got into foul trouble, she stepped in and defended for us."
A day after watching their 17-point lead diminish in a six-minute span to No. 18 Northwest Nazarene Thursday, the Wolves had lost a 15-point advantage Saturday to CWU. Western Oregon took a 30-15 lead over the Wildcats with 6:38 left in the first half, and had a 37-24 lead at halftime.
A Divilbiss' lay-in to begin the second half gave WOU another 15-point margin. An 18-4 Central Washington run over the next nine minutes cut the Wolves' lead to 41-40 with 11:18 remaining in regulation. The lead remained single digits for the rest of the contest. Western Oregon trailed for only 31 seconds in the entire 45-minute game.
Parker led the Wildcats (3-4, 0-2 GNAC) with 20 points off of the bench. The sophomore made 10-of-16 from the field, and grabbed 12 rebounds to complete the double-double. She also had a game-high five steals. VanDyke averaged 20.5 points per game coming into the contest, finished with 19. Courtney Johnson scored 11. VanDyke and Erika Johnson both had three assists.
Western Oregon has an 11-day break between games. WOU travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Las Vegas Challenge hosted by Dixie State University. The Wolves have a rematch with Academy of Art (Calif.) on Dec. 18 at 12 p.m. Western Oregon then faces DSU at 4 p.m. the following day.
