Baseball falls in extra innings to open 2013 season

Wolves rally for three runs in the ninth to tie the game; however, Cal State Stanislaus answers with a run in the 10th to win.

Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. – The Western Oregon baseball team rallied for three runs in the ninth to send the season opener against Cal State Stanislaus into extra innings; however, the Warriors scored a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat the Wolves, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game series on Friday afternoon.

Trailing 5-2 heading into its last at-bat, WOU staged a two-out rally that would send the game into extra innings. Daniel McNabb opened the three-run outburst as his single to right-center scored Garret Harpole to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Following a Blake Miller single to score McNabb in order to cut the lead to one, the Wolves tied the score on a wild pitch as Scott David hustled home to make it 5-5.

The Warriors were unable to answer in the bottom of the inning; however, would rebound with a run in the bottom of the 10th to pick up the victory in the series opener. After holding the Wolves scoreless in the top of the inning, Justin Charles would single home Colt McLaughlin with one out, giving the Warriors a 6-5 win.

The game-winning single capped a perfect day for Charles as the second baseman went 4-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Warriors.

Harpole, McNabb and David would each finish the day with two hits to lead the Wolves as WOU finished the contest with 10 hits against the Warrior staff.


Kody Stone would take the loss for WOU, allowing one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of work. WOU starter AJ Burke allowed three runs while striking out five in four innings on the mound.

David Snapp picked up the victory for the Warriors, allowing one hit in 1.1 innings of relief work.

WOU trailed 3-0 after three innings; however, cut the lead to one with single runs in the sixth and seventh. CS Stanislaus answered with a pair of runs in the eighth, setting up the ninth-inning rally for the Wolves.

WOU still has an opportunity to take the series from the Warriors as the teams close out the three-game set with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11:00 a.m.
