Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Western Oregon baseball team dropped a back-and-forth series finale to Sonoma State on Sunday, falling to the Seawolves, 5-4. The loss dropped WOU to 3-4 on the season as the Wolves dropped a close series to Sonoma State, three games to one.
Sonoma State jumped out to the early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Seawolves took advantage of a throwing error by WOU as Steven Filippi and Sam Montgomery scored on the play for the first two runs of the game.
The Wolves had an answer as WOU posted three runs in the second to take a one-run lead.
Tim Rausch and
Daniel McNabb had RBI hits in the inning as WOU would take a 3-2 lead heading into the third.
Devon Zenn regained the lead for Sonoma State as he delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 4-3.
WOU would tie the game in the sixth on
Garret Harpole's first home run of the year to lead off the sixth inning; however, Scott Fleury's pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the seventh proved to be the difference as Sonoma State would go on to claim the 5-4 victory.
George Amus picked up the victory for Sonoma State to improve to 2-0 on the season after tossing three innings of shutout relief, allowing two hits while striking out four.
Ethan Flory took the loss for WOU, falling to 0-1 on the year after allowing one run in relief of Ben Schlitz. The WOU starter, Schlitz allowed two earned runs on four hits in five innings of work.
McNabb led the offensive attack for WOU, going 3-for-5 with a RBI while Harpole scored two runs for the Wolves.
WOU will return to action on Friday, Feb. 22, when the Wolves travel to Lewiston, Idaho, to open a four-game series against Lewis Clark State at 2:00 p.m.
