TURLOCK, Calif. – The Western Oregon baseball team rebounded from an extra-inning defeat in the season opener by taking both games of doubleheader against Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, defeating the Warriors, 4-0, in game one before clinching the series with a 5-4, extra inning victory in game two. With the wins, WOU improves to 2-1 on the season while Cal State Stanislaus falls to 1-3.
In game one, WOU rode the arm of
Spenser Watkins as the right-hander pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only six hits while striking out five to move to 1-0 on the season. Spencer Trautman allowed only one base runner over the final two innings to earn the save as interim head coach
Kellen Walker picked up his first career victory.
WOU would get all the scoring it would need with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
Daniel McNabb opened the scoring as his single to left-center scored
Tim Rausch from third to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. McNabb would eventually score on a throwing error as WOU would hold a two-run advantage going to the bottom of the inning.
As the Warriors were unable to get on the board over their next three at-bats, WOU would add insurance runs in the eighth and nine to take a 4-0 lead heading into the Warriors final at-bat.
Chris Bradshaw scored on a wild pitch in the eight while
Michael Gange came home on a bases loaded walk in the ninth as the Wolves would close out the Warriors in the bottom half of the inning.
McNabb and

Blake Miller as WOU took a 2-0 lead.
A pair of runs in the sixth would give the Wolves a seemingly comfortable four-run lead as Rausch hit a key two-out, two-run single to score
Vince Ampi and Bradshaw as WOU would take a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Cal Stat Stanislaus responded; however, for four runs in its final at-bat to tie the score. The Warriors loaded the bases with no outs as a Clint Brill single up the middle would score two runs to cut the lead in half. After the Warriors cut the lead to one on a fielder's choice, Ross Gonsalves' sacrifice fly to left field tied the game at 4-4 and would send a game into extra innings for the second time in the series.
This time; however, the Wolves would respond as David would single with two outs in the ninth to score Rausch from third as WOU would take a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the inning.
Kody Stone would retire the Warriors in order in the bottom of the frame as the Wolves picked up the series clinching win.
