SEASIDE, Calif. – The Western Oregon baseball team was unable to solve the Cal State Monterey Bay pitching staff as the Wolves dropped a pair of games to the Otters on Saturday, falling in game one, 5-2, before a tough, 1-0, loss in the series finale. With the losses, WOU falls to 11-11 on the season as the Otters improve to 17-8.
CSMB starting pitcher Will Anderson held WOU in check in game one as he picked up the victory after holding the Wolves scoreless through seven innings to improve to 5-2 on the season.
The Otters would give Anderson the early lead with single runs in the third and the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. CSMB would grab a commanding lead with a three-run sixth inning as Brian Haggert led off the inning with a solo home run only to see David Garcia hit a two-run blast as the Otters took a 5-0 lead into the seventh.
WOU would finally get on the board with RBI hits by
Kyle Mall and
Michael Gange in the ninth inning; however, Jordan Helmkamp ended the Wolves rally as the Otters picked up the 5-2 win.
Gary Steindorf took the loss for WOU and fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing five runs in 5.2 innings of work.
In game two,
Zach Nuno pitched a gem for WOU, allowing only one run on four hits; however, took the loss as Jason Merjano's pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the fifth gave the Otters a 1-0 win.
Jeff Owen improved to 6-0 on the season after tossing six scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out 11. A.J. Quintero picked up his fourth save for the Otters.
Blake Miller had a pair of hits in the doubleheader to lead the WOU attack.
The Wolves will return to action when WOU travels to Lacey, Wash., to face Saint Martin's for the start of a four-game series on Saturday, March 23, at 1:00 p.m.
