MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon baseball team swept an important doubleheader from Saint Martin's on Sunday as the Wolves captured a pair of close contests, winning game one, 5-3, before capturing game two against the Saints, 7-5. The wins gave WOU a four-game sweep of the Saints as the Wolves improved to 15-11 overall, 10-2 in league play, while the Saints fell to 3-23 overall, 1-11 in conference action.

“It was a great effort by our guys and we managed to pick up two important wins,” head coach Kellen Walker said. “We got contributions from our entire club and I thought our bullpen really picked us up this weekend. The wins set up an extremely important series against Central Washington next week.

A.J. Burke earned the game one win for the Wolves as he struck out 10 SMU batters and improved to 2-3 on the season after allowing two runs on five hits in six innings of work. Three WOU relievers managed to hold SMU at bay as Kody Stone picked up his sixth save of the season after retiring the Saints in order in the ninth.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the sixth inning, the Wolves would break to game open as Josh Wong singled up the middle to score Michael Gange to give WOU a 3-2 lead. Vince Ampi would then deliver the key hit in the contest as his RBI double down the left field line scored Wong and Matt Nylen as the Wolves would carry a three-run lead into the seventh.

SMU would manage a run in the eighth; however, it would not be enough as the WOU bullpen would shut the door on the Saints to clinch the series win.

Garrett Harpole also delivered a RBI hit in the victory while Nylen scored a pair of runs in the Wolves victory.

Moss took the loss for SMU and fell to 0-5 on the season after allowing five runs on six hits in 7.2 innings of work.

In game two, Scott David would break a 3-3 tie in the final inning as his pinch hit single in the seventh to score Blake Miller would give the Wolves a one-run lead. David would eventually score on a wild pitch as Stone would slam the door shut on the Saints in the bottom of the inning for his seventh save of the year as the Wolves captured the four-game sweep.

Jesse Pratt earned the victory in relief as he moved to 2-0 on the season after allowing one hit in one inning of work. Banker took the loss for SMU as he fell to 0-2 on the year after allowing six runs on eight hits in six innings of work.

From the start, it looked as if WOU would be in command as the Wolves scored five runs in the first to grab a 5-0 lead. Nylen, Harpole and Will Chavarria each had RBI hits in the frame as the Wolves would jump out to an early advantage.

SMU would chip away at the lead; however, as the Saints eventually tied the game on a fielding error in the fourth inning, setting up David's final inning heroics.

The sweep sets up an important series next week as the Wolves host Central Washington in a four game series, starting with a doubleheader on Friday, March 29, at 1:00 p.m.
