NAMPA, Idaho – Three Western Oregon baseball pitchers combined to one-hit Northwest Nazarene in a game one victory over the Crusaders as the Wolves split a pair of games against NNU on Friday, winning in game one, 11-0, before dropping an 8-4 decision in game two. With the split, WOU moves to 9-8 on the season, 4-2 in conference play.
In the game one victory, WOU rode the arm of starter
Spenser Watkins as the right-hander improved to 3-2 on the season after allowing only one hit in six innings of work.
Brian Pisca and
Spenser Watkins worked three innings of scoreless relief as the Wolves held the Crusaders to just a single hit.
Scott David led the WOU attack as the catcher went 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI while
Daniel McNabb added three RBI for the Wolves.
WOU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second before McNabb delivered a two-run double in the fourth to make the score 4-0.
WOU would explode for five runs in the fifth to take a commanding, 9-0 lead. David delivered a two-run home run to open the scoring in the inning as
Matt Nylen and
Josh Wong added RBI doubles to give the Wolves control of the game.
Vaughn took the loss for NNU and fell to 2-3 on the season after allowing nine runs on seven hits in four innings of work.
After falling in game one, NNU used a seven run fourth inning in game two to earn a split against the Wolves.
WOU grabbed an early lead on a two-run single by McNabb in the second inning; however, NNU would respond by scoring seven in the fourth for a 7-2 advantage.
Robles had the key hit in the inning with a grand slam to left as the Wolves would be unable to rally from the five-run deficit.
Gary Steindorf took the loss for WOU and fell to 2-1 on the season after allowing five earned runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Marsh picked up the win for NNU and improved to 2-0 on the year after allowing three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work. Groves picked up the save for the Crusaders.
The two teams will resume the series on Saturday, March 9, with a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
