MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon baseball team rebounded from a 9-4 loss to Saint Martin's in game one to claim a 7-6 win in game two against the Saints as the Wolves earned a split in the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. With the split, WOU moves to 26-18 overall, 19-7 in league play, while Saint Martin's improved to 6-36 overall, 4-21 in conference action.

Unearned runs doomed the Wolves in the game one loss as WOU allowed six in a seven-run sixth inning that gave the Saint an 8-3 lead. Mario Sanelli and Jack Freeman each had two-run singles in the frame as the Saints grabbed control of the game.

WOU would be unable to recover as Spenser Watkins took the loss for the Wolves, falling to 6-6 on the season after allowing two earned runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Josh Solemsaas led WOU in the game one defeat, going 2-for-2 with a pair of runs while Scott David added a pair of RBI.

Travis Shaw and Sanelli each had three hits for the Saints as Brendan Jeffers picked up the win, moving to 2-4 after allowing four runs on 11 hits in 7.2 innings of work.

In game two, WOU scored four runs in the fifth inning to grab a 7-5 lead as the Wolves held on for a one-run victory.

Matt Nylen provided the key hit in the contest as his bases loaded clearing double, scoring David, Chris Bradshaw and Jake Whisler, erased a two-run deficit to give the Wolves a 6-5 lead. Nylen eventually came around to score on a throwing error to give the Wolves a two-run lead heading into the final two innings.

SMU managed to cut the lead in half with a home run by Shaw in the sixth; however, Kody Stone came into the game in the seventh and tied a conference record with his 12th save of the season to give the Wolves the win.

The save made a winner out of Gary Steindorf as the WOU starter moved to 5-4 on the year after allowing five runs on six hits in five innings of work.

Zach Carter took the loss for SMU and fell to 0-9 after allowing seven runs on 11 hits in 4.1 innings of work.

David led the WOU attack, going 3-for-4 with a RBI to go along with two runs as his RBI single in the first inning cut an early Saints lead in half.

The two teams will conclude the four-game set on Sunday, April 28, at 1:00 p.m. The day will serve as Senior Day as WOU will honor 10 seniors in between games one and two.
