MONMOUTH, Ore. – Trailing 2-1 in the sixth inning of game one, the Western Oregon baseball scored the next 26 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Saint Martin's, winning game one, 9-2, before claiming an 18-0 win over the Saints in game two. With the wins, WOU moves to 28-18, 21-7 in league play, while SMU fell to 6-38 overall, 4-23 in conference action.
“It was a great effort by our hitters as they stuck to the game plan at the plate,” head coach
Kellen Walker said. “We got two great outings from our starting pitchers and were able to open the games up late. We did our job today and it sets up a huge weekend at Central Washington.”
In game one, WOU uses a five-run sixth inning to erase a one-run deficit and cruise to a seven-run win.
Blake Miller led WOU, going 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBI as his run-scoring double in the sixth gave the Wolves a 5-2 lead.
With the bases loaded in the sixth,
Chris Bradshaw gave the Wolves the lead for good as his two-run double scoring Garrett Harpole and
Daniel McNabb gave WOU a 3-2 lead.
Scott David also added a RBI in the inning as the Wolves would grab control of the game.
Miller added insurance in the eighth as his two-run double, scoring David and Bradshaw gave the Wolves am 8-2 lead.
Tim Rausch capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right as the Wolves would win the first of two against the Saints.
A.J. Burke was the complete game victor as he improved to 6-3 on the season after allowing one earned run on five hits in nine innings of work. Burke struck out seven in the win as he needed 114 pitches to shut down the Saints.
Brad Banker took the loss for SMU after allowing four runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work as he fell to 5-5 on the season.
Bradshaw, McNabb and
Will Chavarria had multiple hit games alongside Miller as the Wolves pounded out 13 hits against Saints pitching.
After a ceremony in between games that honored 10 WOU seniors, the Wolves exploded for 18 runs to route the Saints and pick up the series win.
Tim Rausch highlighted the romp as his grand slam in the fourth inning capped a six-run frame as he finished the game going 2-for-2 with two runs and five RBI.
Miller was also perfect in the contest, going 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI as he finished the day with six hits in seven at bats.
Nine WOU batters recorded hits in the contest as the Wolves jumped out to an early, 2-0 lead off of RBI singles by
Matt Nylen and Rausch in the first. Nylen finished the contest with two hits in three at bats as he scored three runs to go along with three RBI.
Senior
Michael Gange added a pair of hits and runs in the sweep while Bradshaw and
Marcus Lefton also recorded two hits each for the Wolves.
Senior
Zach Nuno earned the win after tossing six innings of scoreless ball, allowing only three hits while striking out 10. Senior reliever
Brian Pisca worked around two hits in the seventh inning to preserve the shutout.
With the victories, WOU moves to within one victory of its 12th-straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference title as the Wolves will open a four-game series at second-place Central Washington with a doubleheader on Friday, May 3, at 1:00 p.m.
