BILLINGS, Mont. – The Western Oregon baseball team salvaged a doubleheader against Montana State Billings on Saturday as the Wolves scored seven unanswered runs in the seventh inning of game two to claim a 12-10 win against the Yellowjackets after falling in game one, 8-7. With the split, WOU moves to 18-14 overall, 13-5 in league play while MSUB is 13-20 overall, 9-9 in conference action.
After a disappointing loss in game one, the Wolves looked as if they would drop both games of the doubleheader as MSUB held a 10-5 lead in game two heading into the final inning. WOU responded; however, exploding for seven unanswered runs to salvage the split.
Sam Cameron got the scoring started as his double to right scored
Daniel McNabb to cut the lead to 10-6. After
Scott David delivered a RBI single and
Blake Miller added a sacrifice fly, WOU trailed 10-8 as
Tim Rausch stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded.
The sophomore outfielder delivered as he took the first pitch from Travis Vincent and blasted it over the left field wall for a grand slam to give the Wolves a 12-10 lead.
Reliever
Kody Stone came in and closed the door on the Yellowjackets as he picked up his ninth save of the season while Vincent fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing five runs in one inning of work.
Brian Pisca picked up the win for WOU as he improved to 1-1 on the year after one inning of scoreless relief.
Matt Nylen and Rausch each had three hits to lead the WOU attack in game two as Nylen delivered a two-run blast in the fifth inning to cut a seven-run deficit to 9-4.
MSUB jumped out to a 9-2 lead in game two, led by Brody Miller as he led the Yellowjackets with three hits and three RBI while scoring two runs.
In game one, WOU was unable to overcome an early 4-2 deficit as the Wolves dropped the opener of the series.
Spenser Watkins took the loss for WOU and fell to 5-4 on the year after allowing six runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work while Brady Muller picked up the win for MSUB to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Trailing 8-4 in the eighth inning, WOU cut the lead to one on a three run home run by Nylen; however, Vincent came into the contest to record the final four outs and pick up the save as the Yellowjackets took the series opener.
Miller led MSUB in the win with three hits while Austin Rue and Drew Fosnes added two RBI apiece for the Yellowjackets.
The two teams will return to action on Sunday, April 7, when the squads close out a four-game series with a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
