ELLENSBURG, Wash. – A.J. Burke's four-hit shutout highlighted a tremendous day for the Western Oregon baseball team as the Wolves swept a doubleheader from Central Washington, winning game one, 9-0, before claiming a 5-3 victory in game two. With the sweep, WOU concludes the regular season with a record of 31-19 overall, 24-8 in league play, while CWU finishes with a mark of 28-22 overall, 19-13 in conference action.
Burke was the highlight for the Wolves as he improved to 7-3 on the season, striking out nine CWU batters as he threw only 103 pitches in the complete game victory.
WOU scored runs in each of the first four innings as
Scott David would give Burke all of the run support he would need with his RBI groundout in the first to score
Chris Bradshaw as the Wolves grabbed a 1-0 lead.
Eight WOU batters recorded hits in the win, with
Sam Cameron leading the way with three base knocks while
Matt Nylen delivered a two-run single in the seventh to give the Wolves a seven-run lead.
Blake Miller also added a pair of RBI, including a single in the seventh to score
Josh Solemsaas as the Wolves broke the game open with a four-run inning.
Tim Rausch and David each scored a pair of runs for WOU as Rausch put the finishing touches on the game one win as he executed a perfect double steal with Nylen, stealing home for the final run of the contest.
Tyler Roberts took the loss for CWU and fell to 3-6 on the year after allowing five runs on five hits in 3.0 innings of work.
In game two, Nylen's RBI double scored Bradshaw to break a 3-3 tie as the Wolves would go on to claim a two-run victory. Rausch followed with a RBI single to drive home Nylen, giving WOU a 5-3 lead heading into CWU's final at-bat.
WOU reliever
Kody Stone came into the game to slam the door shut on CWU as the right-handed reliever established a new, GNAC record with his 13th save of the season.
The seventh-inning rally made a winner of
Taylor Hetrick as he moves to 2-1 overall after allowing one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
Randy Button took the loss in relief after allowing two runs and three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Rausch had three hits for WOU to lead the Wolves in the victory while Bradshaw and Nylen added a pair of runs.
Kyle Sani had a pair of hits and two RBI for the Wildcats.
WOU will return to action on Thursday, May 9, as the Wolves play host to the GNAC Baseball Championship. The Wolves will open the double elimination, round-robin tournament when WOU faces third-seeded Montana State Billings at 10:00 a.m.
