LACEY, Wash. – The Western Oregon volleyball team captured a pair of close sets to open the match against Saint Martin's and used the momentum to defeat the Saints, 3-1 (26-24, 31-29, 21-25, 25-12) in a Great Northwest Athletic contest on Saturday evening. With the win, WOU improved to 5-8 overall, 2-1 in GNAC play, while SMU fell to 4-11 overall, 0-3 on conference action.
WOU used a strong defense to come away with the victory, holding SMU to a .067 attack percentage during the match. The Wolves recorded seven team blocks against the Saints as
Hannah Deede,
Becky Blees and
Krissi Kemper each had three in the win.
The Wolves were also a force in thwarting clean SMU attacks as the Wolves had four players finish the evening with doubl-digit digs.
Megan Triggs led all players with 37 digs while
Christie Colasurdo (17),
Jordin Ramos (11) and Deede (10) also turned in solid performances.
Cherene O'Hara led WOU with 10 kills while Deede added seven for the Wolves.
Holding a 2-1 set lead, the Wolves held a slight, 9-8 lead in the fourth set as WOU looked to close out the match. The Wolves would leave little doubt as WOU closed the match on a 16-4 run in order to pick up their second league win of the season.
The win was a start of a three-match road swing as the Wolves will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 3, when WOU travels to Alaska, Anchorage, to face Alaska Anchorage at 8:00 p.m.
