Big Second Half Propels Vikings

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team outscored Western Oregon University in the second half, 46-19, en route to a 78-58 road win Thursday.

The Vikings (8-6, 4-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) trailed 39-32 at halftime, but made 55.6 percent of their shots in the second half, while limiting WOU to seven made field goals. WWU dominated the glass, outrebounding the Wolves, 55-24. Western Washington turned 23 offensive rebounds into 24 second chance points. Fifty-two of the Vikings' 78 points came inside the paint as well.

Western Washington's Taylor Peacocke scored a game-high 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. Sarah Hill recorded 18 points and 16 rebounds in a double-double performance. Sydney Donaldson scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half. Jenni White dished out a game-high six assists. Marcel Pounds made three steals.

After shooting 38 percent from the field in the first half, WWU responded with its 55.6 percent second half output. The Vikings entered the contest as the 13th best three-point shooting team in NCAA Div. II at 45 percent. They made 4-of-9 Thursday. They were also 8-for-11 from the free-throw line.

Western Oregon led for the entirety of the first half, including by as many 10 points. The Wolves scored the game's first five points, and a Chantel Divilbiss lay-in six minutes into the contest gave WOU a 14-4 edge. The Vikings pulled within three points on three occasions, but Western Oregon stretched the margin to seven points at halftime.

Just over two minutes into the second, Donaldson tied the score at 40 with a three-pointer. Western Washington took its first lead 24 minutes into the game after a White fastbreak lay-in. With the score tied at 44 at the 15:55 mark of the second half, WWU began to pull away with a 9-0 run. Through the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Vikings scored 27 of the 35 total points. Western Washington's largest lead was 78-56.

Kelsey Henry led the Wolves (5-9, 2-4 GNAC) with a career-high 17 points. The sophomore made six of her 13 attempts from the field. Divilbiss and Dana Goularte added 15 and 14 points. Divilbiss grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Elise Miller had three assists and four steals.

Western Oregon finished 36.8 percent from the field, 4-of-11 from behind-the-arc, and 12-for-19 from the free throw line. The Wolves forced WWU into 21 turnovers, while committing 15. WOU made a season-high 15 steals.

Western Washington's third straight victory was also the 11th consecutive win over Western Oregon in the all-time series. It was the 50th meeting between the programs.

The Wolves welcome Simon Fraser (B.C.) Saturday. The Clan (9-5, 3-3) is one spot out of the NCAA Div. II Top 25, but fell at Saint Martin's Thursday, 73-71. Saturday's tipoff in the New P.E.
