MONMOUTH, Ore. – Western Oregon University's volleyball team could not extend its winning streak to two matches, as the Wolves fell to nationally-ranked University of Alaska Anchorage, 3-0 (22-25, 16-25, 13-25), in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Thursday inside the New P.E. Building.
The quartet of
Hannah Deede,
Alisha Bettinson,
Sam Moore, and
Cherene O'Hara led WOU with five kills each, as the five Wolves combined for 20 of WOU's 25 kills on the night.
Kiana Cash and
Jordin Ramos combined to hand out 21 assists for Western Oregon, while Cash and
Christie Colasurdo anchored the Wolves' defense with nine digs each. At the net, Deede and
Maddi Ober tallied a team-high two blocks with Bettinson registering WOU's only service ace on the night in the third and final set.
Katelynn Zanders led Alaska Anchorage with a match-high 12 kills, while Kayla McGlathery and Julia Mackey added nine and eight kills, respectively. Morgan Hooe handed out a match-high 35 assists with Quinn Barker registering a match-high 11 digs for the Seawolves. At the net, McGlathery tallied a match-high five blocks.
The opening set would be a back-and-forth battle over the opening 33 combined points, as Western Oregon earned a three-point lead (18-15) on a kill by Moore. UAA would battle back to tie the set at 21-all before the Seawolves used a set-closing 4-1 run that concluded on a kill by Caitlin McInerney for the 25-22 victory.
Set #2 would see Alaska Anchorage jump out to a 6-2 lead before Western Oregon clawed its way back to within a single point (9-8) on a UAA attack error. Unfortunately that would be as close as WOU would get, as the Seawolves used a 12-4 run to extend their lead to nine points (21-12) on Western Oregon hitting error. Despite both teams scoring four points to close out the set, UAA used its advantage concluding on a set-closing service error by the Wolves that resulted in a 25-16 win for Alaska Anchorage.
The third and final set belonged to Alaska Anchorage from the beginning, as the Seawolves increased their 8-6 lead to nine points (17-8) on a kill by McGlathery. UAA closed out Set #3 and the match on an 8-5 run with the match's final point coming via Western Oregon's 20th and final hitting error of the night.
As a team, Western Oregon hit .056 (25-20-90) with the Wolves' best performance coming during the opening set when WOU registered 12 of its 25 kills. On the other hand, Alaska Anchorage combined to hit .279 (47-16-111) on the night with the Seawolves hitting .400 (14-2-30) on the third and final set.
Western Oregon returns to action on Saturday, November 1, against the University of Alaska Fairbanks beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the New P.E. Building in Monmouth, Oregon.
