#WOUSoccer Draws with No, 19 Vikings

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University women's soccer team picked up a 1-1 draw against No. 19 Western Washington University Thursday.

The Wolves (4-4-3, 2-2-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) became only the second team to tie WWU this season. The Vikings remain unbeaten this year. Western Washington struck first in the opening half, but it was WOU that scored a very late goal in regulation to even the 110-minute match.

The Vikings (9-0-2, 5-0-2 GNAC) outshot WOU, 14-11, placing eight shots on goal. The Wolves had five shots on goal.

In the 11th minute, Catherine Miles volleyed a ball into the net off of a Kim Cooper cross just inside the 18-yard box. Allison Sprecher's first goal of the season evened the match for Western Oregon. In the 88th minute, the sophomore brought in a Taija Bjorgo header and struck it across the net into the far post of the goal.

The game was a matchup of the top two goalkeepers in the GNAC. Ashley Haden entered the game as the leading the conference in goals against average and save percentage. The Wolves' Amanda Rose Johnson is second in the conference in both those statistics. Thursday, Johnson stopped seven of the eight shots that came her way, while Haden saved four of five.

This was the second meeting between the teams this season, as Western Washington won a 1-0 decision on Sept. 27, in Bellingham. This was the first tie in the 40 all-time meetings between the programs. The Vikings own the all-time series 33-6-1.

Western Oregon welcomes Simon Fraser (2-8-0, 2-4-0) Saturday. The Clan defeated WOU, 1-0, on Sept. 25, in Burnaby, B.C. Saturday's game is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of cancer awareness. Free shirts will be given to the first WOU students at the game.
