MONMOUTH, Ore. – In the second game of the 2014 Hampton Inn & Suites D2 Shootout, Western Oregon University's women's basketball team dropped its season opener against the Rangers of Regis University (Colo.), 69-54, Friday evening inside the New PE Building.

The Wolves (0-1) were led offensively by Dana Goularte with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Shyla Akins and two other WOU players – Jordan Mottershaw and Katie Goddard – chipped in with eight, six, and six points, respectively. Sydney Azorr and Sami Osborne added five points in their collegiate debuts, while Michelle Bromagem and Angie Titus rounded out the Wolves' scoring with three and two points, respectively. Akins led WOU with four assists, while Goularte registered a game-high four blocked shots.

Regis (1-0) had four players score in double figures led by Sarah Seefeldt's game-high tying 15 points, while Caresse Williams, Bay'lee Purdy, and Kaycee Hert provided 13, 13, and 11 points, respectively. Hert also registered a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds, while Williams handed out a game-high five assists for the Rangers.

Over the opening seven minutes, Western Oregon held a four-point lead (10-6) on back-to-back free throws by Goddard with 12:57 on the clock. Over the next three minutes minutes, Regis used an 8-0 run to pull ahead 14-10 on a jumper by Seefeldt with 10:14 left. The Wolves would go ahead by two points (18-16) following an 8-2 run that was capped on a three-pointer by Akins with 8:46 remaining. That would the final lead of the night for Western Oregon, as Regis scored nine unanswered points with Purdy closing the run with a three-pointer at the 6:06 mark of the first half that put the Rangers ahead by seven points (25-18). Over the final six minutes, Regis would close the half by outscoring the Wolves by two points en route to earning a nine-point cushion (35-26) at halftime.

The second half would begin with Regis scoring seven unanswered points en route to pushing their lead to double digits (42-26) on a old-fashion three-point play by Seefeldt with 18:22 left in the game. Western Oregon would cut its deficit to single digits (44-35) via a 9-2 run that ended on a three-pointer by Azorr with 14:46 on the clock. Regis would use a 10-4 run en route to pushing its lead to 15 points (54-39) with just over nine minutes remaining before Western Oregon used an 11-5 run to pull within seven points (57-50) on a fast break lay-in by Goddard with just over five minutes left. Unfortunately that would be as close as the Wolves would get, as Regis slowly pushed its lead back to a game-high 16 points (68-52) on a pair of free throws by Williams in the game's final minute. The visiting Rangers would knocked down five-of-six free throws in the game's final minute en route to earning the 69-54 victory in the season opener for both teams.
