Six Players Score in Double Figures in #WOUMBB's Win Over Camosun

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Six players from Western Oregon University's men's basketball team scored in double figures, as the Wolves extended their winning streak to seven games with a 94-59 victory over Camosun College (B.C.) Saturday inside the New PE Building.

"I told the guys the build up to this week was a test of maturity meaning that being able to approach any game in any situation and give it the fullest amount of attention and respect that it deserves," said Head Coach Brady Bergeson. "We knew that Camosun would come in and if we allowed them to play their game and be comfortable that they would give us all kinds of problems. We saw that last night when they went in and built a 16-point lead at halftime against Concordia. They are warriors. They had to drive down here, get enough rest, get up early, and be ready for an 11 o'clock game. They would have (built a lead against us too) had we not come out and really played exactly the way that we needed to. We had attention to detail. We were focused and I liked our approach. Regardless of the situation, I like our guys mentality today."

Western Oregon (8-2) was led offensively by the junior tandem of Devon Alexander and Julian Nichols with 12 points each on a combined 12-for-18 shooting from the field, while junior Jordan Schriber and redshirt sophomore Connor Thompson registered new career highs with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Juniors Andy Avgi and Jordan Wiley also scored in double figures with 11 points each, while Thompson pulled down a game and career-high seven rebounds to go along with a game-high four assists by Wiley.

"It was nice to get some guys in there and get them some experience," commented Bergeson. "Regardless of the lineup that we had in, we moved the basketball and found open hands. We've talked a lot about that. It is always something that we are trying to do and I am proud of the guys. They did that and shared the ball. We had a pretty good spread of shot attempts between our guys. We had a number of guys get success today and it was fun."

For Camosun (3-5), Evan Woodson led the Chargers with a game-high 18 points with James Giuffe and Kevin Transchel adding 12 and 11 points, respectively. Woodson also grabbed a game-high tying seven rebounds, while Ted Neilson handed out a team-high two assists.

The game would begin with Camosun scoring the opening two points on a jumper by Giuffe 62 seconds after the opening tip before Western Oregon scored five unanswered points on a fast break lay-in by Alexander followed by a three-pointer by Wiley resulting in a 5-2 lead with 18:11 on the clock. Both teams would fight back and forth over the next five-plus minutes resulting in an 11-10 lead for the Wolves following back-to-back free throws by Camosun's Neilson with 12:52 left. Over the next four minutes, Western Oregon used a 19-3 run en route to securing a 17-point lead (30-13) after back-to-back lay-ins by Alexander with the final one coming with 8:49 remaining. The Wolves would push their lead to 20 points (36-16) less than two minutes later before WOU extended its lead to 49-24 on a lay-in by Thompson with 94 seconds left on the clock. Western Oregon would settle for a 21-point cushion (51-30) at halftime after Thompson tipped in a missed shot for the final points of the opening half.

Western Oregon opened the second half by scoring the first 17 points extending its six-minute run over the two halves to 19 straight points resulting in a 68-30 lead after a pair of free throws by senior Lewis Thomas with 14:50 left in the game. That would be the largest lead that the Wolves would secure, as Western Oregon continued to hold a 30-plus point lead throughout the remainder of the game resulting in the final margin of 35 points (94-59).

As a team, Western Oregon combined to shoot 40-for-71 (56.3%) from the field that included a 3-for-12 (25.0%) performance from beyond the three-point line to go along with an 11-for-14 (78.6%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Camosun was a combined 18-for-41 (43.9%) from the field, 5-of-12 (41.7%) from long distance, and 18-of-25 (72.0%) at the charity stripe.

Western Oregon returns to action on Tuesday, December 16, against Multnomah University beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the New PE Building in Monmouth.

When asked about preparation for next week, Bergeson said, "We are going to build right on top of it. We have a very hungry group to improve and get better each day. We've got specific targets set, we had specific targets set for this week, we will have specific targets set for next week. Regardless of who we are playing and what the situation is, we always try and do that and have goals to reach for the group. That is exactly the approach for next week. We will try and build on what we accomplished today as a group and get back and practice hard on Monday to get ready for Multnomah on Tuesday night."
