RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Western Oregon University's women's basketball team continued its six-game road trip to close out the 2014 calendar year, as the Wolves fell to nationally-ranked California Baptist, 67-54, Saturday inside Van Dyne Gymnasium.
"We played a really solid first half and shot the ball well," said Head Coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter. "Jordan had the hot hand and we did a good job capitalizing on their turnovers."
Western Oregon (2-6) was led offensively by sophomore
Jordan Mottershaw with a career-high 19 points on 8-for-19 shooting from the field, while freshman
Sydney Azorr was the only other Wolves' player to score in double figures with 11 points for WOU. Freshman
Sami Osborne chipped in with eight points off Western Oregon's bench, while senior
Dana Goularte provided seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds that included four offensive boards. Junior
Elise Miller also aided WOU's offense with seven points, while Goularte handed out a team-high two assists for the Wolves.
For California Baptist (8-1), Kamille Diaz scored a game-high 29 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field that included an 8-for-13 outing from beyond the three-point line. The Lancers' offense also got 14 and 12 points, respectively, from Cassidy Mihalko and Courtney Nelson, while Erin Asher provided team-highs of nine rebounds and five assists off CBU's bench.
The game began with California Baptist opening a nine-point lead (13-4) in the first two-and-a-half minutes on a three-pointer by Diaz with 17:32 on the clock. Five minutes later, the Lancers increased their lead to 13 points (21-8) on another Diaz three-pointer with 12:28 left. California Baptist would push its advantage to 27-10 on a three-pointer by Mihalko with 8:37 remaining before Western Oregon scored 16 unanswered points over a six-plus minute stretch to pull within a single point (27-26) on a lay-in by Goularte with 2:04 on the clock. The Wolves would battle all the way back to tie the game at 31-31 on a free throw by Azorr with just under one minute to play before CBU closed out the scoring in the first half with its seventh three-pointer of the opening twenty minutes by Diaz resulting in a 34-31 lead at halftime for the home team.
After Diaz opening the scoring in the second half that put California Baptist ahead by five points, Mottershaw scored five unanswered points within a 48-second span to tie the game at 36-all with 18:16 left in the game. That would be as close as Western Oregon would get, as CBU used a 16-6 run over a six-minute span to go ahead by 10 points (52-42) with 12:07 remaining. California Baptist extended its lead to 16 points (59-43) less than four minutes later, as the Lancers held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game en route to earning the 13-point victory (67-54).
"We hit our marks with offensive rebounds and we defended in spurts, but we did not have an answer for Diaz," added Howard-Carpenter. "She shot the ball extremely well and we just went cold in the second half."
As a team, Western Oregon combined to shoot 19-for-59 (32.2%) from the field that included 3-of-16 (18.8%) from beyond the three-point line to go along with 13-for-16 (81.3%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, California Baptist was a combined 23-of-64 (35.9%) from the field, 12-of-29 (41.4%) from long distance, and 9-of-12 (75.0%) at the charity stripe.
Western Oregon returns to action on Wednesday, December 17, against Holy Names University in the opening game of the Las Vegas Shootout hosted by Dixie State University beginning at noon in Las Vegas, Nevada.
