MONTEREY BAY, Calif. – The Western Oregon University baseball team managed a split on their first day of the 2014 season at No. 18 Cal State-Monterey Bay Saturday.

The Wolves (1-1) dropped their season-opener, 15-0, before holding off a talented CSUMB squad, 4-3, in the nightcap.

In the first game of a four-game series, and a doubleheader Saturday, the Otters (1-1) proved their No. 2 NCBWA NCAA Div. II West Region ranking. The Wolves entered the game ranked ninth in the region. CSUMB scored five runs in the first two innings and cruised to the win behind 15 runs off of eight hits. WOU finished with seven hits, but committed the game's three errors. Western Oregon stranded 11 runners on base, while the Otters left nine.

Jeff Owen (1-0) picked up the win for Cal State-Monterey Bay. The junior struck out five WOU batters, while allowing no earned runs and throwing three walks through four innings. He gave up three hits. Josh Eagle also struck out five Wolves in three innings of work. A.J. Quintero finished the game on the mound, striking out four in the eighth and ninth innings.

Spenser Watkins (0-1) was credited with the loss for Western Oregon. The senior allowed three hits and one earned run through five innings on the mound. He struck out four CSU-Monterey Bay batters, while walking three others. Tim Rausch was 2-for-3 at the plate.

In Game 2, it was Western Oregon that scored first and then held off a late Otter rally. Matt Minnich (1-0) allowed no runs, struck out three, and walked three in four innings of work. Kody Stone sealed the victory and picked up his first save of the season.

Marcus Madden brought in Daniel McNabb to open the scoring in the top of the second with a single to left center field. The Wolves added three runs in the sixth off of three hits. With two outs, McNabb hit a single to second base, which drove in Parker Miles, Nathan Etheridge's double scored McNabb, and Madden singled up the middle to bring in Etheridge.

Cal State-Monterey Bay made things interesting with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Otters left one runner stranded in the bottom of the seventh. Kory Groves (0-1) picked up the loss in the second game. In four innings, he gave up two hits and no earned runs.

"Obviously we didn't play very well in Game 1, but credit to our guys for bouncing back against a very good Monterey Bay team," WOU Head Coach Kellen Walker said. "Matt Minnich came up with a very competitive start for us and allowed us to settle into that second game. We will need to be cleaner in all aspects of the game tomorrow."

The third game in the series between the Wolves and CSUMB has a 10 a.m. first pitch scheduled for Sunday. Live stats will be available on WOUWolves.com.
