MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University women's basketball team fell short in their second match up this season against the Saint Martin's University, 59-56, Saturday.
The Saints (12-7, 5-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) broke their three-game losing streak, but the Wolves added a fifth game to theirs. The second matchup was much different than the first, which the Saints ran away with a 77-46 win in Lacey less than a month ago.
Western Oregon held SMU to just 29 percent shooting from the field, while it shot 35 percent. The Saints had a slim 42-41 edge in rebounds. SMU only committed nine turnovers, a season-low for a Wolves' opponent, while WOU had 13. Both teams combined for 5-of-30 from behind-the-arc. Saint Martin's was 23-for-32 from the free throw line, while the Wolves made 15 of their 25 attempts.
Saint Martin's had three players reach double digits in scoring, led by Chelsea Haskey. She finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. The senior also made four blocks. Brooke Paulson and Megan Wiedeman both contributed 11. Paulson recorded a game-high four steals. Angela Gelhar was the lone Saint with multiple assists with two.
The Wolves led the Saints for only four minutes in the first half. A jumper by Haskey put the Saints on top 20-19, with 19 seconds remaining in the first half, and gave them the halftime advantage. SMU shot just 24 percent from the field in the first half, compared to Western Oregon's 26 percent.
The Saints managed to hold WOU off for the majority of the second half. The second half featured two ties, and one lead change. A
Dana Goularte lay-in with 3:47 remaining in regulation gave Western Oregon its lone lead of the half, 51-50. The advantage lasted only 19 seconds.
Goularte led Western Oregon (5-14, 2-9) with a stellar night. The junior scored 16 points, matched a career-high 17 rebounds, and made a career-best four blocks.
Chantel Divilbiss chipped in 12 points and had a game-high three assists.
Saint Martin's won for the 30th time in a series that dates to 1983. The Saints have won the last four meetings between the schools.
