LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State College baseball team rallied for a 10-inning 5-4 victory over Western Oregon University Sunday, to take the series.
Lewis-Clark State, the second ranked team in the NAIA, scored the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom on the 10th inning. WOU scored the first four runs of the game and had two leads in the ballgame, before having its chance to split the road series slip away. The teams combined for 20 hits, and LCSC had both errors in a game played on a cold, wet, overcast day.
Chris Bradshaw scored the first run of the game, crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
Garret Harpole then brought in
Tim Rausch with a single through the left side. In the top of the second inning,
Daniel McNabb singled to center field and drove in Bradshaw.
Matt Taylor then crossed the plate on a
Nathan Etheridge sacrifice fly to right field. The Warriors (7-1) answered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning, tying the game at four.
The Wolves (6-6) took their second lead of the game, 5-4, with a
Caleb Falck single to center field that brought in Harpole. Jake Shirley evened the score with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning over the left field fence. After threatening with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, LCSC scored the winning run in the 10th inning. Raymond Pedrina crossed the plate on a passed ball to seal the series win.
Cody Chartrand (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season on the mound. The junior threw 18 pitches in the 10th inning, allowing one hit and no runs. He was one of six pitchers used by the Warriors Sunday. WOU had an active bullpen as well, as it utilized seven pitchers.
Kody Stone (0-1) was credited with the loss.
"We had opportunities that we didn't take advantage of early," Western Oregon Head Coach
Kellen Walker said. "Against good teams you have to extend a lead when an opportunity presents itself.
"Our bullpen threw well today. Late in a series to ask your bullpen to get you that many innings isn't ideal. But guys stepped up and made some big pitches when they needed to."
Bradshaw hit a triple and Taylor had a double for the Wolves. Bradshaw, Falck, and Harpole all had two hits.
The Wolves welcome Concordia (Ore.) for their home opener Tuesday. The meeting will be the 77th all-time between the Cavaliers (3-2) and WOU. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Concordia of the NAIA has accepted an invitation to join the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in 2015. The invitation is contingent upon Concordia being admitted into the NCAA's membership process. Concordia applied for NCAA membership, with a decision rendered by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee expected this summer.
"This team has really been tested early this year," Walker said. "We have been in some tough adverse situations that you want to be in early in the year. It gives you a great feel of where the club is and where it's headed. It's a talented group; the performance piece needs to be better to consistently come out on top at the end of ballgames."
