Cavaliers Steal Win in Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Concordia University baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to escape with a road win at Western Oregon University Tuesday.

In the Wolves' home opener, the Cavaliers (7-2) extended their winning streak to four games with the victory at the No. 6 team in the NCBWA NCAA Div. II West Region poll.

Trent Calmer finished 4-for-4 at the plate and scored twice. Christian Lichtenthaler was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Ryan McMonigle (1-0) received the win on the mound after allowing two earned runs on two hits through three innings. The junior did retire the side in order in the bottom of the ninth. He finished with six strikeouts. Brad Bearden started for CU and allowed two hits through 2.2 innings of work.

Neither side allowed a run in the first two innings, but Concordia scored twice in the third off of three hits. Western Oregon responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, as Matt Taylor reached on a fielding error and Jarrod Turner crossed the plate. The Cavaliers added a run in the top of the seventh to take a 3-1 lead.

The Wolves countered again with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Bradshaw reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Sam Cameron. Bradshaw was driven in off of a Parker Miles single to left field that evened the score at three. In the top of the ninth, Ian Erickson hit a two RBI double to left field with one out. CU added an insurance run before sealing the victory with McMonigle's finish on the mound.

Turner finished 3-for-3 and Daniel McNabb hit 2-for-4 for WOU (6-7). Six Wolves made an appearance on the mound, as Chase Tokunaga (0-1) was credited with the loss. Jacob Storedahl threw the first four innings, allowing one earned run on four hits. He fanned four Cavaliers.

Concordia left eight runners on base, and finished with 12 hits. Western Oregon stranded seven, and had seven hits. The Cavaliers committed two of the game's three errors.

The Wolves open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play against Central Washington Friday. Tuesday, the four-game series was moved from Ellensburg, Wash., to Monmouth this weekend. WOU hosts the Wildcats (4-4) in a pair of doubleheaders that start at noon on Friday and Saturday. Western Oregon travels to CWU now on April 5-6 for four games.
