Baseball Drops Two Saturday

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University baseball team took the first two games of a four-game series against Western Oregon University Saturday, 11-9 and 2-1.
 
The Wildcats (17-12, 10-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) became the first team in the conference this season to take two games from WOU in a series. The Wolves won the previous four GNAC series this season, 3-1.
 
Daniel McNabb and Nate Etheridge both went 3-for-8 at the plate, while Matt Taylor and Chris Bradshaw both had three hits in nine at-bats. Etheridge, Taylor and Parker Miles all scored twice. Etheridge hit a pair of doubles.
 
Western Oregon (19-13, 12-6 GNAC) lost Game 1 despite outhitting the Wildcats, 17-9, and CWU committing four of the game's five errors. Both teams opened the game with a pair of runs in the first inning. Central Washington hit two of its three home runs in the game in the first and second inning. Eric Tinnell hit a two-run shot over the right field fence in the second inning and Zach Reay cleared the left field wall in the third.
 
The Wolves evened the score at four after RBI from Tim Rausch and Will Chavarria in the third and fourth inning. CWU responded with two runs in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth. Trailing by four, WOU tied the score at eight in the seventh after a two-run home run from Rausch a two-RBI single by Sam Cameron. Another Wildcat home run in the bottom half of the inning put Central Washington back up two. The teams exchanged runs in the eighth.
 
Nolan Amundson (1-0) picked up first win of the season in his first decision. He threw only 18 pitches in 0.2 innings. Stuart Fewel pitched the first 6.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits. He struck out five Wolves and walked one. Nick Keller (0-1) was credited with the loss after eight pitches and two earned runs. Spenser Watkins threw the first four innings.
 
The second game was a pitchers' duel. Brandon Williams (6-1) threw a complete game and allowed only one earned run on five hits. He fanned eight Wolves and walked only one. Seventy-eight of his 121 pitches was strikes. Matt Minnich tossed the first five innings for WOU. He gave up no earned runs and only two hits. Taylor Hetrick (2-2) was credited with the setback after allowing one earned run and two hits in the sixth inning.
 
The Wildcats scored the first run in the bottom of the second on a throwing error. A Taylor RBI single that drove in Chavarria tied the score in the fifth inning. Jake Levin singled through left side and scored Kasey Bielec for the winning run in the sixth.
