ALLENDALE, Mich. – It may not have been the race he wanted to run, but Brady Beagley couldn't have asked for a better place to end his Western Oregon University outdoor career than at the NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University and the West Michigan Sports Commission.

Beagley completed his stellar four years on the outdoor track with a 9:55.64 time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The senior ended his outdoor career right where he belonged, among the top 20 runners in the event in NCAA Div. II.

"I mean it's great to be here in all, but you obviously want to do better at something like this," Beagley said. "But, it happens and I'll be back for indoors next year. It just wasn't my day."

The Grants Pass, Ore. native, stayed with a very quick pack for the first 1,000 meters before the front-runners began to pull away. Beagley was positioned in the second of two heats, which ended up being the faster of the pair. After placing 10th in his heat, he ended up 19th of the 20-man field.

"Well, my heart rate got up and my body just kind of shut down because I haven't had a lot of workouts in the past month due to an injury," Beagley said. "My body just wasn't used to that high of a heart rate and after 1,000 meters, everything shut down."

Beagley entered the event with the 16th best seed time in the field at 9:07.66. He had the eighth fastest seed time in his heat.

The top 12 times advanced to Friday's finals. Harald Karbo of Augustana (S.D.) had the top prelim time at 9:05.86, while Kutztown's (Pa.) Zach Fleming grabbed the final spot in the finals at 9:15.17.

Beagley finished the regular season with three NCAA provisional marks. His time of 9:07.66 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival was the fastest in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this year. It is fourth on the WOU all-time list. Beagley also had the third best mark in program history in the 5,000 meters (14:35.37), and fourth best time in the 1,500 (3:50.72). He set all those top-10 marks this season.

"It's been a great four years on the outdoor track," Beagley said. "Coach (Mike) Johnson has taught me a lot. When I first got here I was a nobody really. Especially in the last two years, I've made a lot of improvements. I just never would have thought I'd be at the national meet a few years ago. I've definitely come a long way."

Beagley still has one more year of indoor eligibility and will return for the Wolves in 2015 for the completion of his collegiate career.

Western Oregon has a pair of participants on the track at the national championships Friday. Tyrell Williams runs the 200 meters at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time, followed by Josh Hanna in the 800 meters at 6 p.m. Live video and results will be available on WOUWolves.com
