MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Humboldt State University women's soccer team escaped with a 2-1 overtime victory over Western Oregon University Saturday. It was the season-opener for WOU.
 
The Lumberjacks (1-1-0) used a goal in the first overtime period to pull out the road win. The Wolves had a 13-10 advantage in shots, but it was HSU that took advantage of their chances. Humboldt State put six of its shots on goal, while WOU had five.
 
After allowing only one goal at home last season, Western Oregon surrendered a shot into the back of the net 17 minutes into the season. Maddi Null played a nice ball through the WOU defense to Lizzie Mitchell, who then struck a ball into the lower left of the goal.
 
Ten minutes later, Makana Pundyke scored her 10th career goal for the Wolves. The junior took a pass from Taylor Higa and then chipped it over the 'Jacks' goalkeeper.
 
Despite eight shots by Western Oregon in the second half, it was Humboldt State that struck first in overtime. Six minutes into the first overtime, Courtney Rebata headed a ball in off of a corner kick from Colette Behen.
 
Humboldt State's Amber Woolcock saved four shots in the game, while Amanda Rose Johnson made three saves for Western Oregon. The Lumberjacks committed 12 fouls to WOU's four.
 
The Wolves (0-1-0) travel to Hawaii for a trio of games beginning Tuesday at Brigham Young-Hawaii. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Hawaiian Time.
