BURNABY, B.C. – Despite 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field by freshman
Sami Osborne, Western Oregon University's women's basketball team fell to Simon Fraser University, 76-56, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Saturday inside West Gymnasium.
Western Oregon (4-11, 1-6 GNAC) would get double-digit scoring totals from Osborne, sophomore
Jordan Mottershaw (12 points) and junior
Katie Goddard (11 points). Junior
Elise Miller added seven points, a team-high tying five rebounds, and a pair of assists with Mottershaw also pulling down five rebounds for the Wolves.
Simon Fraser (9-6, 5-2 GNAC) ws led offensively by the GNAC's leading scorer Erin Chambers with a game-high 21 points, while Meg Wilson and Rachel Fradgley also scored in double figures with 19 and 11 points, respectively. Wilson led all players with nine rebounds, while Ellen Kett handed out a game-high 10 assists for the Clan.
Over the opening six-plus minutes, Simon Fraser jumped out to a quick 16-3 lead before Western Oregon used a 17-10 run over the next 10 minutes to pull within six points (26-20) on an old-fashion three-point play by Osborne with just over three minutes on the clock. Over the final three minutes of the first half, Simon Fraser outscored Western Oregon by a single point en route to securing a nine-point lead (33-24) at halftime.
The second half would begin with Western Oregon using an 18-13 run over the opening six minutes to pull within four points (46-42) after a jumper in the paint by Osborne with 14:01 left in the game. Unfortunately that would be as close as the Wolves would get, as Simon Fraser scored 11 unanswered points over a five-minute span to pull ahead 57-42 with just over nine minutes remaining. The Clan would push their lead to a game-high 23 points (71-48) six minutes later before Western Oregon closed the game on an 8-5 run resulting in the final margin of 20 points (76-56).
Western Oregon, who was playing without the services of senior preseason all-conference selection
Dana Goularte for the fourth straight game due to an ankle injury, combined to shoot 18-for-54 (33.3%) from the field that included a 4-for-9 (44.4%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 16-for-20 (80.0%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Simon Fraser was a combined 31-for-69 (44.9%) from the field, 8-of-23 (34.8%) from long distance, and 6-of-11 (54.5%) at the charity stripe.
The Wolves return to the hardwood on Thursday, January 22, against the visiting Falcons of Seattle Pacific University beginning at 7 p.m. inside the New PE Building in Monmouth.
