Wolves close home record with 1-0 loss

Montana State Billings slip in a late first half goal on Western Oregon soccer’s Senior Day.

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Western Oregon soccer fell to Montana State Billings, 1-0, on Saturday, despite their best efforts to create offensive opportunities.

Although the Wolves (7-7-1 3-6-1 GNAC) outshot the YellowJackets (7-6-2, 5-5-1 GNAC), 14-4, Western Oregon did not get the result they wanted on their final home match of the season and on their Senior Day.

The only goal of the match occurred when Montana State Billings' Dana Lubieniecki and Dariann Oaks had a combination pass to eventually lay the ball off for Brittney Greenback. She lobbed a shot high over goalkeeper Nicole Tejada to earn her first goal of the season.

Brooke Steinberg had a dangerous opportunity when she took a free kick at the corner of the 18-yard box. Her shot just missed the goal, landing wide left of the goal.

With several of the Wolves' shots taking place outside of the box, Shelby Peterson also had a good look at goal when she took a straight shot from outside of the box that ended up to the wide left.

The Wolves continued to push for the offensive attack in the second half. Mariah Konyn had significant opportunities as she took two shots at the top of the box with one aimed at the YellowJackets' goalkeeper, Chloe Hopps, and the other skimming just a few inches over the crossbar.

The YellowJackets did not take a shot on Western Oregon's goal in the second half until the last 11 minutes as the Wolves did not allow them far into their defensive end.

Western Oregon constantly looked for the crosses straight across Montana State Billings' goal, played long balls over the defense, and served free kicks, but no one was able to at least obtain the equalizer.

One of the Wolves' last chances came when Steinberg sent a free kick into the 18-yard box. After a scramble between the teams with the ball, Vicky Cruz Rosales took a shot at the top of the box that ended up slightly wide and high.

Overall, Konyn took three shots for the day, while Rosales, Steinberg, Pundyke, and Payne each had two shots. Peterson, Taylor Higa, and Caitlin Castillo also had one each.

Tejada did not record any saves today, whereas YellowJackets' Hopps made three.

Western Oregon soccer finished off their home matches with a 4-4-0 record. They also recognized eight seniors and their accomplishments as Wolves.

Up Next: The Wolves will finish off the regular season of conference play at Seattle Pacific on Thursday, October 29, and at Simon Fraser on Saturday, October 31.
