NAMPA, Idaho (Oct. 29) -- Despite a fourth consecutive double-double from sophomore
Alisha Bettinson, the Western Oregon volleyball saw its three-match win streak snapped in four sets (27-29, 25-23, 13-25, 15-25) at Northwest Nazarene on Thursday night at the Johnson Sports Complex.
The Wolves, who battled to close results in the first two sets, fell to 7-15 overall and 4-9 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The loss to the Crusaders kept NNU in a tie for the GNAC lead with an 11-2 league mark and 14-7 for the year.
Bettinson saw the brunt of the NNU serves throughout the match to post 19 digs combined with 11 kills and six block assists.
Western Oregon played even with the host Crusaders in the opening set, with each team scoring 52 points over that span. WOU wiped away NNU's first attempt at game point and had two attempts of their own to close out the set before three consecutive errors pushed the Crusader to an opening set win.
Freshman outside hitter
Amanda Short led the Wolves with 11 kills before intermission, five coming in the second set. The Wolves sprinted out to a 11-4 lead in the game and held of late NNU rallies.
Mariella Vandenkooy put down the final kill to give Western Oregon its first set win over the Crusaders since November 2013.
After the break, Northwest Nazarene ramped up its blocking and defense to hold WOU to 16 kills while forcing 17 errors in the third and fourth games combined. Kendra Bodine and Madi Farrell each had 15 kills for NNU.
Joining Bettinson with double-digit digs was junior
Christie Colasurdo and sophomore
Sheila Limas De La Cruz with 13 apiece. Colasurdo had a great night behind the service line with three aces in 14 total attempts
Western Oregon continues its weekend trip with a Saturday night match in Ellensburg against Central Washington. The match begins at 7 p.m. Pacific inside Nicholson Pavilion.
