WOU Swept in Rematch with Cavaliers

Bettinson doubles up again despite 3-0 loss

PORTLAND, Ore. – Amanda Short and Alisha Bettinson combined for 26 kills, but the Western Oregon volleyball team was unable to pull a set from host Concordia-Portland in a 25-23, 26-24, 25-21 loss on Tuesday night at Cavalier Court.

The loss extended the Wolves' current skid to three matches, falling to 7-19 on the season and 4-13 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Concordia snapped a four-match losing streak to pull within a game on the .500-mark in league at 8-9 and 16-9 on the year.

Short took match-high honors with 14 kills on 38 attempts. Bettinson, meanwhile, had 12 kills and 12 digs for her 12th double-double of the season (fourth consecutive).

WOU had a 15-8 lead in the opening set, only to see the Cavaliers string nine of 10 points later in the game to seize control. The Wolves erased one game point, but could not find an equalizing swing to fall by two. Set two was a back-and-forth affair that saw 15 ties and 11 lead changes. Western Oregon had a game point after a Short kill, nevertheless CU strung three straight points to swipe away another game for a 2-0 set lead. In the third set, the Cavaliers scored five straight after a 14-14 stalemate. The momentum carried Concordia to the sweep.

The Wolves, who finished with a .197 hitting percentage as a team, managed two service aces and were slightly outblocked 7-6 by the Cavaliers. CU committed 15 errors to swing at a .206 clip for the match.

Christie Colasurdo led all players with 26 digs in the three set match while Bettinson and Sheila Limas De La Cruz each had 12 digs.

Western Oregon will look to return the win column on Saturday, when they host Montana State Billings for a 7 p.m. match in the New P.E. Building. Saturday's match is the last of the season at home before the Wolves play twice in Alaska next week.
