GOLDEN, Colo. – Junior guard
Launia Davis scored a season high 10 points in 20 minutes of reserve action, but the Western Oregon women's basketball team was unable to keep pace with the Regis University in a 74-53 loss on Friday afternoon at the Mines Thanksgiving Classic.
Â
The loss kept the Wolves winless away from Monmouth, now 1-4 overall on the season. Regis improved to 2-3 after snapping a two-game skid.
Â
Davis, whose previous best was eight points in the season opener against Cal State Monterey Bay, went 3 of 9 from the floor and sank all four free throws attempted. She added an assist.
Â
"Launia came in and played with a sense of urgency and gave us some much needed offense," Western Oregon head women's coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said.
Â
WOU's offense stalled in the opening quarter, leading only to seven points after turnovers and offensive fouls kept the Wolves from attempting a shot on four consecutive trips down the floor.
Â
"It took us way too long to adjust to the way the game was being called," Howard-Carpenter added. "We weren't able to get the stops we needed to go on runs and that's where it really starts … defense."
Â
Trailing 17-7 after the first quarter, Western Oregon bounced back from the charity stripe. Despite not scoring from the field in the final 3:15 of the half, makes from Davis and
Michelle Bromagem kept WOU within striking distance at the half.
Â
The Rangers were led by Bay'Lee Purdy with a game-high 29 points on 8 of 11 shooting.
Â
"Credit to Bay'Lee, she's a tough player and she earned everything," Howard-Carpenter said.
Â
Western Oregon finished the game shooting 36.4 percent from the field (16 of 44), including 23.5 percent (4 of 17) from 3-point range. The Wolves were 17 of 22 from the free throw line, where they broke even with Regis.
Â
Two WOU starters –
Sydney Azorr and
Jordan Mottershaw – each had eight points in a starting role. Azorr and
Jasmine Miller led the Wolves with five rebounds.
Â
Western Oregon will return to action on Saturday afternoon, visiting the tournament host Colorado School of Mines at 3 p.m. Mountain.
